Totally new area for me, but I'll give it a whirl, MN can help with most things!

Friends of friends of mine are in a real mess - the Mum is really ill in hospital - will need a long period of recuperation (we're talking months and months), Dad can't take that much time off work. Kids from primary school age down to a few months, currently split up with different relatives across the country. Large-ish house, dog, you get the picture.
Where do you start with these things - do nanny agencies exist outside of London?!

Any initial tips of where to go for advice / anyone know local agencies?
Are social services likely to be of any help?

Thanks.

Nanny agencies do exist in various parts of the UK and they may be able to provide a temporary nanny at short notice. However agencies charge quite a lot of money. You can recruit via the internet a lot cheaper - such as by advertising on sites like Childcare.co.uk (which also enables nannies to list themselves), Nannyjob.co.uk

anyone know local agencies?
You haven't told us where the family are located.

Probably not. They may refer you to the Families Information Service, who provide details about all types of childcare providers - however they won't know much about nannies.

East Midlands Nannies covers Leicester and other places in the Midlands.

If you are able to be more precise on the location - such as nearest Town, then maybe someone reading this may know of a nanny looking for work in that area.

Hello I am in leicestershire but due to have my own baby on 26th aug so cant really help, other than the odd day or eve over the next week.

The best agency in the area in my opinion is www.kidsmatter.uk.com

I believe they are in the Ashby de la Zouch area, if that helps.

Thanks for those pointers - I will pass them on.
