waters breaking or pregnancy incontinence?

I'm 38 plus 4 with my first child. Last night during one of my usual toilet trips, after I got back in bed I felt something between a trickle and a gush. I wasn't sure if ( as half asleep) I hadn't finished on the loo or if it was my waters. I got up and my knickers were wet so I put on a pad and went back to sleep eventually.
This morning I didn't feel anything and no trickles but called the hospital who told me just to monitor for the next few hours and to come in if more trickles - but she said the pad would normally be wet all the time.
The baby has dropped lower and this of course will be putting more than usual pressure on my bladder. I have a pad in and for the last hour or so I am getting an occasional trickle like feeling. When I go the loo the pad is only slightly wet.
I know I should probably go the hospital to be checked so just deciding when to go.

What is your advice if you have had your waters break with a trickle and not a gush??
What did it feel like?

I should add I don't have any other symptoms, no pain, no contractions.

If you smell your pad if your waters have gone I think it will smell sweetish rather than of urine!

My waters just trickled, didn't actually gush out until about 2hrs before DD was born. I felt like I was constantly dribbling, but when I went to the toilet I couldn't pee. The midwives asked to check the pad I was wearing - what they did with it I'd probably rather not know! - and they told me that it was probaly coming from my hindwaters.

Apparently amniotic fluid is odourless so you could possibly work it out that way...?

Sorry, x-posted with Librashavinganotherbiscuit!

mine trickled - odourless and pinky tinge.gentle contractions started later that night and got stronger early morning.

Mine trickled for a week with DD1. In those days (10 years ago) it meant being in hospital till she deigned to arrive, but now I think they just tell you to take it easy. They did have a tester stick thingy to check what the fluid was though. Good luck!

Thanks for responses.
This is like an odourless trickle, not sweet smelling, but just now and then. It would be so much easier to tell if it just came in a gush!

I could be wrong about the sweet smelling!

Mine trickled for ages, but I thought I was incontinent! So I'm not the person to ask....

kapars · 29/06/2010 22:27

I've been into hospital. It was my waters and apparently I am also contracting....
So if labour doesn't establish overnight at home, I have to go in to be induced in the morning!!!!

ooooh good luck, you excited? (I am)

kapars · 29/06/2010 22:43

yes very excited. bit disappointed i won't get my water birth and that I might have to be induced but as long as she comes out safe and sound that is all that matters. x
