Spinal block for suture

Hi everyone,

I gave birth to DS 3 weeks ago and it all went very quickly - I had convinced myself it would be a long process you see. I ended up delivering 2 hours after getting to hospital and don't think anyone realised how far I was until I started to push. Yes it was very painful on just gas and air but what I hadn't expected was to then require a spinal block for the stitches - I just wondered if anyone had experienced this? The midwife did some stitching which was ok but I was still bleeding so the registrar was called - he tried but it really was extruiating and he certainly was not as gentle as the midwife. He then said he couldn't do it and I needed go to theatre! Which meant didn't get to see DS weighed etc etc. Anyway, Just wanted to hear other experiences really,

I can understand you being disappointed that you didn't see your son weighed but once some time has passed you will realise it isn't that big a deal. I missed my two babies being weighed or anything as I didn't see them for hours due to emergencies so it puts things in perspective.

I realise I probably don't sound sympathetic but I think you are in danger of making this into a huge deal and taking energy away from enjoying your son.

You had an unpleasant experience but your son and you are here and I am sure he is completely scrummy.

I know how you feel!

I have had two home births now and both times i have ended up in theatre due to tearing. It never occured to me that i would not be able to have it done with regular pain relief especially after no pain relief and a large baby (over 10lb).

First one i had a GA because i was in so much pain that i was unable to relax enough to have it done, second was a spinal.

I am now expecting number three and would like another home birth even if it results in theatre again.

Its not the end of the world. My children are here safe and sound. I am successfully stitched and do not suffer the trauma i might have, had i been forced to be stitched with inadequate pain relief.
