Is it normal to have a sweep at 38 weeks

Sil is pg on her first, since 20 weeks she has been saying the doctor sais baby looks big and will probably be premature because he is measuring 4 weeks ahead . Before that she thought it was twins because she is so big Since 32 weeks she has been saying she wants the baby to come soon because she can't cope with the pain much longer (no major complications).

However now she has said baby is measuring 7lbs 7oz at 38+1 so she is having a sweep. If that does not work she has a induction day set for 39 weeks because the baby is really big apparently it doesn't seem big to me my dd was 8lbs 2 and I thought scans were not that accurate. . If the baby goes over 4.4kg consultant apparently said she will need a csec is this common for having a big baby. I haven't said anything to her and probably wouldn't but I am just worried because I thought it was very hard to be induced before term

A sweep really only works if labour is imminent, which is unlikely at 38 weeks.

If she has a sweep when she is not ready, she will undoubtably have lots of irritating, niggly contractions which don't do anything to progress labour.

7.5lb is fair average. She is not having a huge baby.

No, not normal. If labour isn't imminent the MW prob won't be able to do it anyway, and she thinks 7.5 is big??

Plenty of people have 10lb babies with vaginal births.

As far as i know, scans are notoriously inaccurate. My baby was 9lb 13oz at birth (although was 8 days overdue) and none of staff seemed unduly concerned. I had to have an assisted delivery (ventouse) but that was due to position of baby rather than weight.

Can she ask for a second opinion? where is she having the baby? Ad Mme said, sweep will only work if labour is imminent.

Is inducement at 39 weeks or csection needed in this situation.

She wants the baby early so seems very chuffed as she sais she cannot take the pg niggles anymore so I doubt she has had a second opinion or wants one. I believe she has actually pushed for this. Other SIL was induced due to bad pre -eclampsia and they seem to like competing. God I feel bad for saying that she is a nice person but being a bit funny with this pg.
