How long after a c-section should your stitches come out?

I had an elective section last Thursday and my scar is very sore and pulling. I had a midwife visit at 5 days but not having another one until Monday, ten days after the op. The midwife looked at the scar but didn't take the stitches out. Should I have had the stitches out by now and if not, could that be causing all this uncomfort or have I just been overdoing it?

My stitches dissolved, so didn't have to be removed at all. Can you give your midwife a ring or pop in to make sure yours aren't the same.

I had staples and they came out on Day 4.

5 days here. I had one long stitch with a bead on each end.

Had the same as showofhands, was taken out by midwife around day 7 I think.

Thank you all. Gwennie, def is a long stitch with a bead at the end, so don't think they are dissolvable.

Any know the consequences of them not coming out till day 10 at the earliest? Could I get an infection?

Yes definitely. They should come out day 5 or 6 latest. Why didn't she take them out then? I didn't get mine taken out until 6 days and I was very uncomfortable - I don't think you can wait until 10 days. Can you get an emergency GP/nurse appt tomorrow am and have them taken out?

BosomsByTheSea · 04/06/2010 20:38

I'd call mw or go to GP if wound is sore. Possible consequence of infection could be 'de-his' (breakdown) of tissue around the wound and the edges coming apart.

mine also bead and long stitch, out on day 5.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 04/06/2010 20:43

Edges coming apart is exactly what it looks like. will call now and see if I can get an emergency appointment. Have been really let down by the midwife service am thinking of complaining.

Thank you so much for replies.

Hope you get this sorted soon Oranges.

And please do complain. Your MW should have taken the stitches out the other day and if she didn't, then she should have told you why.

If you aren't squeamish, you can actually take them out yourself if you have some antiseptic swabs. Just cut the bead off at one end and pull the other end and it will come out pretty easily. Personally I'd do that but I appreciate that not everyone would want to do that!

I had long stitch with a bead on the end, I think they came out on day 6

mummytosquidgies · 07/06/2010 10:36

I had staples, and had them removed on day 7.

Hopefully you've had them out by now! Do you have an update?
