Those who've had c-sections - when did dh/dp take paternity leave?

Just want to ask your wise ladies advice: did your dh/dp take paternity leave once you were home or did you need him around immediately afterwards to help out in hospital?

With my planned cs P took leave from the day of the op. I was fine in the hospital as it was my second cs but he was still needed for DS at home and general visiting / ferrying things around.

If it's your first cs I would recommend you have your DP there as it's quite a shock and hard going with the first one. My second was fine though.

Once we got home, the visiting hours were quite strict so he couldn't of hung around the ward anyway.

He took the day of the op also though.

I went for a scan on the Monday afternoon and ended up having the baby by emergency section that evening. DH rang in to work the Tuesday morning to say he wouldn't be in though did go in for a few hours on the Wednesday afternoon, but only as I was fine about it. He then was off for the rest of the week and the following week. We had come home on the Saturday when DS1 was 5 days old.

I would have absolutely hated for him to not be there every day I was in hospital.

He took the day of the op off and then popped in during his lunch hour while I was in. He didn't take leave until I was home.

Are you talking about elective c-section?

Do you have any older children?

DinahRod · 13/05/2010 19:21

BBH, no 3 would be an elective.

Have two older children, aged 4 and 6, who would be at school/CM and nursery in the day. GPs have also offered to take them on holiday for a week in the summer (am due July)

And 5 days post op in hospital? Is that usual? Was imagining, I realise perhaps naively now, it was about 3?

Can find out loads of info about the actual procedure but nothing practical like when you found having dh around most useful or, and this are my latest ponderings, do you wear maternity pads to the op and did you all get a wax beforehand, if it was a planned section?

Apart from the op DH didn't take leave til I was home with #1. With #2 I am stil waiting for him to take paternity leave and she is 5 weeks old!

bibbitybobbityhat · 13/05/2010 22:08

Well, for my second c/section (elective) dh took the day off. His parents came to our house to stay and helped him look after dd, so I think he went in to work for short hours on days 2 and 3. I had to manage with minimal help in hospital, but that was ok. Day 4 I came home and he probably took about another week off after that.

I didn't wear any pants in to the op (they put you in a hospital gown), I didn't wax (but then never do), you would probably only have to stay in for as long as 5 days if there was some minor complication with you or your baby.

Hth.

My DH was off straight away, to be honest the midwives were so busy I needed him on the ward to help me by changing DD and passing her to me on the first day. Then again the visiting for partners was 9am-9pm so it was well worth him being able to be there.

You don't wear underwear to the op. I had shaved my legs etc., made me feel better when the madwives were changing the incopads and removing the catheter and stuff .

Only stayed in for three days. DH took 4 weeks off in total, but that was annual leave that he had saved, I didn't need him there, but it is nice to have someone to do all the cooking and cleaning and entertaining

twolittlemonkeys · 14/05/2010 10:54

Straight away with first C/S (though work let him have an extra day off at the end of the week so he had the day off when I went into labour, plus 2 clear weeks. I was in for 4 days

2nd time round, took the day off for the op but went back to work and popped in to see me in his lunch hour and after work whilst my mum came with DS1 in between times. Started PL the following week once I was home. In 2 nights 2nd time round

This time round I'm due 24 Dec and as his work is closed 23 Dec - 2nd Jan hopefully he can start PL in Jan and have loads of time at home with us! :-)

I had emergency C-section for me DS (no other children). DP took paternity leave from the day I delivered onwards and I have to say that I really needed him there to help in hospital. I had a massive blood loss etc and a baby who didn't sleep and with midwives being so busy I really relied on him coming in to hospital every day to let me get a sleep etc.

I was in a private room though so he was allowed to be there from early morning until late at night so this might not be possible in all hospitals.

Nymphadora · 15/05/2010 09:19

Dh will be off from the day of my op this time as otherwise he won't be able to be off for the op IYSWIM. Only 3 days in hospital here and only way he can visit in the afternoon visiting times is to be off ( doesn't get annual leave).

DinahRod · 15/05/2010 12:10

Thanks, this has helped a lot.

we don't have paret6ns to help so DH took his pat leave from the day of the CS, as DS1 needed looking after.

He also took 2 weeks holiday. I recovered v quickly so we had a great time out and about with the boys
