Is it wrong to prolong induction with BP problems?

tiggz · 23/03/2010 14:25

Hi all. Im am 11days overdue, i have had high BP since around 26weeks and Iv now been on tablets for around 7weeks to lower it. Since being on the tablets my BP has settled a little bit, but i still have the odd bad episode. Yesterday i was admitted to hospital with my BP being the highest it has ever been throughout my pregnancy and i had protein in my urine and i was seeing flashing lights. I am booked in to be induced on thursday by which point i will be 13days overdue. My BP is constantly up and down, which is worrying, they re-admitted me today for checks and to make a decision on inducing me or not today, they chose not to! Because everything was ok today, but they are not looking at the big picture, that my BP is all over the place and tonight it might not be ok, my MW said thats the type of BP they worry about the ones that sky rocket then go back to normal. They said its no point because im being induced thursday, but surely they should just do it now? Instead of leaving it and taking the risk that my BP goes really high again? Isnt that dangerous? I personally think they've left me long enough considering my situation and the tablets i am on, i think its disgusting they are still leaving me even with this recent episode! What would your hospital do?

Last night a doctor examined me and said i wouldnt go into labor naturally for ages yet, so i will have to be induced thursday, so its not as though they want to leave me just incase they can avoid it!

I don't claim to have expert knowledge on this, but on the face of it, it does seem daft not to induce you now, if your BP is not stable, and you are due for induction on Thursday anyway. The only thing I can think is that maybe they are leaving you until Thursday for induction in the hope that your BP will settle down - but they should have told you if that's the case.

Have you tried raspberry leaf tea or fresh pineapple or a curry, to try to bring on labour? Also clary sage oil is supposed to do that too. If you can face it, sex is supposed to help too - though at over 40 weeks pregnant, I doubt I'd have wanted to even contemplate sex!

MumNWLondon · 23/03/2010 15:00

Does seem fairly surprising they didn't induce you, I can only guess your BP was low enough for them not to worry and the longer they leave you the more likely it is for the induction to work easily.

Morloth · 23/03/2010 15:03

As StayingDavidTennantsGirl is induction very safe if your BP is high at the time? Wouldn't it make more sense to see if it settles down a bit first?

It is generally better for things to go naturally isn't it, for you and baby.

tiggz · 23/03/2010 15:47

stayingdavidtennantsgirl yes that is what i thought, its confusing though as, Yesterday a doctor and her senior said they would like to induce me, yet today a different doctor said no! soo anoying. Yes i think i have tried just about everything to induce labor naturally except rasberry tea and castor oil, and iv had 3sweeps, dont know if yesterday she done another one or just examined me, she said my cervix could only take one fingertip, so i wasnt going to go into labor naturally!
mumnwlondon yes it suprised and annoyed me too, today my BP was alot better, but MW said that they worry more anout Bp that is all over the place, one minute high and one minute low...exactly what mine is doing.
morloth yes it is, but unfortunately its not goin to happen naturally as id wished for it was either today or thursday induction and cervix is nowhere near ready! So i would have much rather it had been done today!
Its very worrying because i knnow my BP could shoot up at any minute and i could end up the hospital again, its not like i'd be premature, im 11days over!! rgghh its so frustrating, i just dont understand it. And another thing is taxi's are not cheap to keep going backwards and forwards to the hospital in.
thanx for your replys

Don't worry too much about the cervix. My friend had a sweep on the Wednesday, was told her cervix was nowhere near ready. She went into labour two days later!

tiggz · 23/03/2010 17:26

shaz10 thanks, its encouraging to hear that. Fingers crossed i might just go into natural labor! doubtful though lol. I dont mmind either way now, i just want baby here now natural or induction!

Hells bells. Get yourself induced for Chrissake. Labile BP (i.e. all over the place) is certainly the most worrying and with the protein and flashing lights I am AMAZED they are leaving you to go on like this. Have they taken any blood from you? Please tell me they have...

Firawla · 23/03/2010 17:35

im suprised they have put this off til thurs
with u seeing flashing lights and everything!
and already 11 days over... i would have thought they would just keep u in and induce immediately, perhaps you can call again and explain them that ur quite concerned
would have thought they'd give priority to something like this above a normal scheduled induction for someone thats just gone over but otherwise healthy...
perhaps u will need to be a little bit more forceful with them, i dont mean rude or anything but keep asking them for 2nd opinion or something, ask if u can see consultant? who did u see in the 1st place that sed ur okay to wait?

tiggz · 23/03/2010 17:37

reikizen Thats the thing i would LOVE them to induce me now, can i request it? Yes they have taken blood, that was normal, but the protein in my wee went from nothing to 3+'s to 1+ to nothing in a few hours, its always like that, my BP rises and then i get syptoms like
flashing lights
headaches
swelling
dizziness
fainting ect ect
but then because my protein and BP goes back down they are leaving me! its so frustrating, if it was likely to stay down and controlable id understand it, but its not, its not relieable, it probably will go back up, and the fact that im already on labetalol 100mg 2x a day, and my BP still goes ridiculously high for me...why are they waiting?

MmeLindt · 23/03/2010 17:40

No idea about BP but the doc I saw said that if he could pronounce when a baby was going to be born then he would be a very rich man. He said that it is not possible to make that kind of judgement.

The BP thing does sound worrying. I would call and insist on speaking to the consultant. Don't be afraid of making a nuisance of yourself.

tiggz · 23/03/2010 17:40

firawla i just get to see the doctors who say, "i dont think we should induce you, i will talk to the consultant or senior and see if he/she agrees with me" they come back and suprise, they always agree, and end up sending me home! Do you think being a little more forceful would help?

OP posts:
tiggz · 23/03/2010 17:41

mmelindt Thats my problem, im too shy, dont want to bug them! but maybe i need to if im thaat worried

OP posts:
MmeLindt · 23/03/2010 17:47

Tiggz
It is YOUR body, YOUR baby and you are the one not able to sleep at night because you are so worried that something might go wrong.

Get on the phone, be forceful and insist on speaking to the consultant. He is not a God, he is just a man and right now he is working for you.

Explain that you are very concerned and that you want to speak to the consultant, be polite and friendly. Say that you are hearing differing opinions from different doctors and it is unsettling you.

tiggz · 23/03/2010 17:52

ok thanku for the advice, not sure what number to call, would it just be my labor ward do you think?

OP posts:
MmeLindt · 23/03/2010 18:03

Not sure, but if you ring them they can give you the right number.

Good luck

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 23/03/2010 18:05

Someone on another thread has asked for suggestions of how to bring on labour, and evening primrose oil capsules have been suggested - apparently you put them up your fanjo and they help soften the cervix. It does have to be pure evening primrose oil, but apparently the cheapy superdrug ones are good.

tiggz · 23/03/2010 18:52

Just called them, they said "because i have no symptons at the minute, and because it is late, its difficult to talk over the phone and to call back tomorow morning to talk to my consultant about bringing the induction forward" i bet by the time i call them tomorow they will say "you've got no symptons and you get induced tomorow, so theres no point", manyana manyana!!! im so fed up

OP posts:
hazeyjane · 23/03/2010 19:43

Hopefully it will all kick off tonight then (labour that is!).

I was 10 days over with dd1, and 14 days over with dd2. I had 3 sweeps and each time they said that I was no way ready to give birth - both times it started naturally.

I don't know anything about high bp, mine is low, hopefully you will get to talk to someone tomorrow about it. I hope things do start for you naturally. Hang on in there.

MmeLindt · 23/03/2010 19:49

Well done for calling anyway. Ring them every hour from 6am tomorrow. They will be so fed up that they will bring you in early

no seriously. Ring them in the morning. They will hopefully have a chat with the consultant before you phone so he has the chance to have a look at your notes.

Will cross my fingers that it kicks off tonight. I was 14 days overdue, I know how impatient you are. Just think, by the weekend you will be holding your baby

reikizen · 23/03/2010 20:13

You need to speak to the consultant, they are the ones making the decisions. Ring labour ward and ask to speak to the consultant on call. That's what I'd do. Honestly.

tiggz · 23/03/2010 23:10

hazeyjane Thankyou, i hope so too! im keeping my fingers crossed!

mmelindt now that actually, isnt a bad idea mwahahaha! lol, you can tell im overdue and bored cant you! Thankyou, i really hope it does!

reikizen Yes thankyou, thats what im going to do tomorow morning. Even if they dont start me, which i doubt they will, i spose its only 1 more day to wait!

Oh my good im soo impatient, i keep getting all these mixed emotions, i just get random outbursts of being really excited, is that normal? [hmmm] hope so!

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 24/03/2010 11:26

Are you on the phone badgering them, tiggz, or have they capitulated already and whipped you in for induction? I'm sending contracting-type vibes your way.

tiggz · 24/03/2010 15:37

stayingdavidtennantgirl no im still here! they are leaving me until tomorow, and to make things worse i ended up da hospital last night for a couple hours because i had diareeh and they said going by my wee i might have a water infection, didnt have any symptoms until today tho, so now my stomache is sore, iv just been for a pee and guess what, i feel like i need to pee! If they'd of induced me ages ago like they should have i wouldnt be sat here now feeling like crap with a water infection...im soo fed up.

OP posts:
hazeyjane · 24/03/2010 15:42

Sorry to hear you're having a rough time.

I had diarrhoea before labour with dd1 and 2, so hopefully it is a sign that things are on there way!

Thinking of you.
