Is there any point in a 3rd sweep ?

Hi, am now 41+1 and have had 2 sweeps already. The first caused alot of cramps and some dialation. The 2nd made me spot for a day or so.
I have a midwife appointment tomorrow and will probably be offered a 3rd sweep, is there any point in having a 3rd if the other 2 haven't worked ?
Can it do more harm than good ?

Otherwise I am facing induction next Monday.

My ds1 was born spotaneous at 38+4. So would really like some advice please ?

My third worked... it is always work a crack sweetheart and certainly can do no harm

Good also to face an induction knowing you have tried it all.

Good luck and keep your chin up, the baby will come out eventually........... honestly

alypaly · 16/03/2010 20:29

try a bit of nookie if its not too uncomfortable...the hormone is sperm will bring it on

MissHairspray · 16/03/2010 20:35

I went two weeks over, had three sweeps in total and managed to beat the induction by 7 hours. Can't say for definite whether the last one worked or he was ready to come out anyway, but it's worth a shot. Less hassle than a drip anyway!
Baby might still come out on his own, I had no signs whatsoever, went to bed fulling expecting to go in for induction the next day then started getting contractions at 1am.
Good luck!

I have tried everything, including nookie.
Ah well tomorrow is another day.

Thanks tartyhhs.

Hiya im 40weeks plus 4days and i had my 3rd one today, i know it does feel like a bit of a waste of time and lets face it its not the most comfortable thing to be put through 3x is it. I had mine hours ago but still nothing, i think all people are different, i think you should go for it as like the others said you got nothing to loose and its definately worth a try...maybe it'l be 3rd time lucky! good luck xx

tryingtobemarrypoppins2 · 16/03/2010 20:51

I had 3 sweeps and then the day after had a total labour and birth lasting 40mins......MAJOR SHOCK!!

tiggz · 16/03/2010 20:55

"tryingtobemarrypoppins2"
my god, i really hope mines that short! how many hours did it take for the sweep to work for you?

JackBauer · 16/03/2010 21:04

I had 4 over a week, I gave birth 5 hours after the fourth!
It is worth a try!

tryingtobemarrypoppins2 · 16/03/2010 21:06

No you don't it was terrible! Head out in the car, etc, pain was TERRIBLE! They had a crash call for me after as I went a bit out of it!! 24 hours after the sweep!

tiggz · 16/03/2010 21:13

My god, i bet it all felt very surreal! I really hope this one will work for me!

tryingtobemarrypoppins2 · 16/03/2010 21:15

At 42 weeks i went into labour with my second Eight hours after my 5th sweep the night before I was due in hopsital for induction. I was told its common for that to happen as your body tries to avoid induction. Wishing you Good luck!

tiggz · 16/03/2010 21:30

its very strange how the body knows things like that, kinda facinateing, i just wiish our bodies would know our bloody due dates lol!

joanne34 · 18/03/2010 03:36

Didn't get the 3rd sweep. Midwife didn't see the point as I only had one Sunday and that hadn't worked !
I may be able to get one on Saturday, I'll phone in the morning !
She wasn't very supportive atall really.

waste of time going !

Aww sorry to hear that, thats not far atall! i do think some midwifes can be very lets say "distant" and not very supportive sometimes. She should have just done one, it would of been worth a shot. I had my 3rd one on tuesday but nothing yet! but every woman and her body nd baby are different. i hope you get one saturday.
all the best xx

joanne34 · 18/03/2010 19:00

Got one for Saturday, if that doesn't work then induction on Monday. Oh well.

Good luck for Sat.
I had 1st sweep at 41 weeks, 2nd sweep at 41+3 and 3rd at 41+6. Three hours after 3rd sweep DS was born.
Reckon you'll have baby this weekend!

tiggz · 18/03/2010 20:33

Oh good luck joanne34 how overdue are you now?

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 18/03/2010 20:38

I thought there was evidence to show that sweeps are most effective (as long as your cervix is ripe and ready to rock) if you do 3 sweeps, three days on the trot. Speak to you MW about it and see what she says.

LizP77 · 18/03/2010 20:53

Hi everyone...

I'm 40 weeks now with my first baby, due date was Tuesday just gone. I went to my midwife today and we discussed me having a sweep as I wanted to give myself as much time as possible to have a natural labour, and avoid being induced. Anyway...as she did the sweep it turned out that I have a 'narrow pubic arch' and couldn't reach the cervix.
As this happened to anyone else?

At the time, this threw me into major panic as she said it may make a 'natural birth' tricky? Hadn't even given C-section a thought up until now, but maybe we need to??

Or...could this be a simple 'midwife error / inexperience' and maybe we need a second opinion??

Has anyone had this? Would be nice to hear some positive stories from people in similar situations...

joanne34 · 19/03/2010 20:37

Thanks cathers, I pray that will happen!
Am getting braxtons and aches but have had for weeks anyway........

Tiggz, I am today 41+4.

Sorry lizp, I haven't heard of that before, get onto your docter if you are worried, she should have really explained !
