How to tell the difference between mucous plug and vaginal discharge (sorry if tmi!)

About 3 times today, I've had a creamy / clear thick, jelly like discharge, the first (I think) had a very pale pink 'vein' through it. It was like a globule, but only about up to a teaspoon in size. Can anyone help me fathom out if this is the mucous plug (which I never knowingly had last time) or just heavy discharge? How do I tell the difference?

I'm 36+4, but DS was born 37+0.

Thanks for reading. I am also getting slight stomach cramps today, but not sure if I'm imagining these

I don't know really-never had a show but is this the first time during the pregnancy that discharge like this has happened?

sheeplikessleep · 03/03/2010 17:58

Yes, I've had discharge, but that's been more stretchy. This was like a globule. But it looked very similar.

I have only had one show but it was obviously a show it was really really thick and there was loads of it, definately wouldn't have got it mixed up with discharge.

However, having never seen anyone elses I couldn't tell you if they all look like that.

Hmm, sounds like it could be the plug, some women describe it as quite loose jelly like stuff which they lose over quite a while, whereas others like myself had it all come out pretty much all at once in one big gross lump as thick and stretchy as that rubber glue they stick freebies on magazines with. (Nice!)

The pink streak is promising too, blood in the plug normally means dilation. It doesn't necessarily mean things will happen straight away though, I've heard you can lose the plug and not have anything happen for up to a week or two.

Thanks for posting. I had a definite plug this morning - much bigger blob and had definite streaks of pink and brown in it, no confusion! I've also been getting cramps again on and off today. DH has cleaned the house and my bag is definitely packed and ready. Bet we'll be waiting another week now!

Thanks for posting

Was just about to say definatly sounds like it - I lost mine in smaller blobs then The Blob came. Good luck! xx

Thanks for asking this question - I was going to post exactly the same thing this morning! I've had the jelly and the cramps, but no pink vein or major Blob yet! So I guess I'll hang on and see what happens... (with flannel tucked in knickers to catch it all). No need to call DH back from work yet then... thanks again OP, and good luck!

I don't actually remember seeing one

thefinerthingsinlife · 05/03/2010 20:20

I 'lost' my plug (pinky brown glub about a tablespoon amount) and had ds1 just over 12 hours later.

Hope all goes well
