breastfeeding and conception

I'm busy feeding a 8 mth old, as I am a 41 yr old myself - if I want to have another baby it would have to be soon, anybody know if it is actually possible to become pregnant whilst still breastfeeding?

Plus I already have a 3 yr old, is it possible I'm just feeling broody because of hormones?

Yes it is possible to become pregnant whilst breastfeeding (if you are ovulating).

Breastfeeding can delay ovulation, but as you ovulate before your first period, you may not think you are ovulating and get pregnant.

(I hope that makes sense, I appear to have used the word ovulation/ovulating more than I have ever done in one sentence before!)

I had my first period when my ds was 8 months old, so technically I could have conceived 2 weeks before that.

Thanks, actually I think I may have been ovulating today, but not too sure. Was just wondering cause of age surely feeding would seriously reduce liklihood of conceiving?

Its definately possible but bf can reduce fertility, as breastfeeding can delay ovulation.

I didn't get a period until 6 weeks after I stopped feeding at 6 months even though wasn't feeding during night at all since 10 weeks.

Are you having regular periods? If not then your fertility is probably compromised, if you are then why not check to see if ovulating?

re: age, fertility declines with age, but everyone different, some women still v fertile at 40 others less so - did you conceive your 8 month old easily?

I wasn't over forty but I had no period between conceiving DS1 and DS2. I was exclusively breastfeeding DS1 but fell pregnant again when he was five months old.
