Is there any correlation between how bad your period pains are and how much labour hurts?

I know pain is a very personal thing and different people have different pain thresholds and experiences of pain and that period pain can't really be compared to labour(!) but idle mind is wondering whether women who suffer from bad period pains find labour easier or still really painful and worse on the whole than those who don't have monthly agony?

If you typically have practically painless periods are contractions a shock to the system or is it just that you don't tend to feel pain as much?

Or are the two things completely unconnected?!

Well I've always thought there's an inverse corrolation. Women who claim that their contractions were "only like bad period pains" must have blardy horrific period pains!

Seriously though, I used to get very bad pains for about 2 weeks every month and I felt alot of that in my legs. My labour pains (which were horrendous btw) were also predominantly in my legs, especially early on, and continuous. DS was OP though, so I'm not sure if there was a link with my period pain or not.

I had very bad period pains (on mega painkillers, threw up from the pain) for years, both my labours were really very painful, much worse - but I was over 2 weeks overdue and induced both times.

Post-babies though my periods were much better so there is an upside!

Not for me I never have period pain, but I can assure you labour was painful.

I have relatively ok periods physically (mentally, I tend to crash & burn ) and had pretty reasonable first labour and, tbh, downright straightforwards second labour.

When you have a period, are you literally screaming in agony and begging someone to inject anaesthesia into your spinal column? Have you lost control to the extent that you are shitting and puking and don’t care who sees because the pain is so all consuming that you can’t think or breathe? Are you hyperventilating in terror to the point that you require oxygen? Do you feel like you’re going to die?

I haven’t experienced bad period pain but I’ve experienced labour and I thought it was pretty fucking bad.

I did, however, suffer from a chronic pain condition that left me pretty debilitated during a flare up and always thought labour pains couldn’t be worse. They were

I barely get any period pains, most recent period the worse I remember, one of my first periods after childbirth and coming off birth control. Sometimes changed inside. But that was waking up one night, needing to change position then took some parac and got my husband tp. Put his hand on my abdomen, fine by morning. Labour was painful, couldn't really but I scale on it but early labour, before any pain relief and being induced was about 10x worst period pain and after induced I had epidural.

I get zero period pain, but labour pain is all in my back and so intense I pretty much scream through the entire thing.

I get zero period pains but labour was one gigantic session of being stabbed in the stomach with zero breaks so no correlation here.

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 18/03/2020 09:42

I get period pains that are occasionally so bad that I can't talk but they are nothing compared to contractions - when I was in labour I felt like I dissociated from my body to a place of all encompassing pain (after my waters broke anyway, they were manageable beforehand).

But, the epidural was amazing!

Zoey36 · 19/03/2020 08:50

I had AWFUL period pains. Excruciating pain and thought I was going to die sometimes! I wouldn't describe my labour as painful. It was intense and much more physical hard work than dealing with period pain but it was not pain in the same way as periods were. I didn't use pain relief whereas I couldn't have imagined ever surviving a period without pain relief! And it wasnt constant! A little holiday between contractions! Period pain was constant. Periods ever since have been easy and completely pain free! Labour fixed me!

Porcupineinwaiting · 22/03/2020 16:17

Not sure they are comparable.

If it's any comfort I found my period pain was much reduced in the years after I had my children.
