Broken my Ankle

Hi, I'm keen to hear from anyone who has experience of giving birth with only one leg!!!!!!!! Strange I know! On Monday I got the all clear from the birth centre and on Tuesday I broke my ankle in two places. They still say I can come into the birth centre but i wondered about positioning etc. I want as natural birth as possible. The mid-wives don't know what to suggest! x

Well, a water birth is definitely out!

Poor you.

Seriously though, how high up does your cast go? Can you bend your knee? Would you be able to stand, holding onto the end of the bed?

blametheparents · 24/01/2010 21:53

How many weeks are you?

Can you put any weight on your leg?

You poor thing x

There's someone else on mumsnet who is pregnant and has broken her ankle I think. Not sure what sort of birth she is planning. I think it is a poster called mawbroon.

I was 37 weeks yesterday! I can't put any weight on my cast but I can bend my knee. I've bought a limbO thing that covers the cast and means i can go into water for 20 mins.

I'm finding standing on one leg for more than a couple of minutes knackering!!!! Oh gosh what t'do!?

You may find a birthing ball useful, takes the weight off your legs without putting undue pressure on your bottom/spine like being in bed does. That was my experience anyway. I also think you need to talk to a physio with ob experience asap to make a plan.

FlouryBap · 25/01/2010 12:39

can you do hands and knees?

InmaculadaConcepcion · 25/01/2010 14:17

Hi catinacast

Yes, mawbroon is at a similar stage to you with her pg and is likewise in a cast thanks to a broken ankle.

If you go to the Babies Starting To Arrive Feb 2010 Antenatal club (find the shortcut to antenatal clubs below this thread) you can compare experiences with mawbroon and join in the OMG NOT LONG TO GO!! excitement/anticipation/dread of the other Feb 2010 people (including me! - Welcome aboard)

Thank you InmaculadaConcepcion I have just posted but am new to this and not sure I do it right but lovely and exciting to get responses to my situation.

Thank you everyone...

In answer to flourybap I haven't tried but think I could do hands and knees if my foot was hanging off the end of the bed, will try once I have the proper cast on.

I had just blown up an exercise ball from Tescos when I did it and was loving rolling my hips on it so once I hear I can even put a little bit of weight on my left foot I'm back on it!

As I did it so easily I do worry about 'risks'... such a shame as I've been quite cool about the pregnancy.

Anyway it will fix and it's not the end of the world, it's just a busted ankle!

x

I knelt on all fours on the bed, leaning over a beanbag. No danger of a beanbag rolling off the bed, but it gave me something to lean on! You could try that, with your bad ankle hanging off the bed.
