URGENT HELP PLEASE!! am I in labour? I am SERIOUSLY snowed in and need advice

Am 40Wks +9, had sweep yesterday, been having period like cramps since about 4am, across the lower part of my belly. Waters haven't gone. Cramps last about 15-30 secs, every 5-15mins.

Is this the onset of labour? I haven't rang midwife yet, as snow is so bad they won't be able to send someone to assess me, if anyone is coming out it will be a one trip job where midwife will have to come to me via our local mountain rescue team and stay till the job is done.

Any advice on what to do now or when to ring midwife etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

latestincarnation · 05/01/2010 13:44

Good luck! Hope it all goes well

anothercoldcupoftea · 05/01/2010 13:45

Indith - my contractions started at 6 mins apart and stayed like that for a good half a day or more, so gave me about 3 or 4 mins shopping time between each one!

clumsymum · 05/01/2010 13:48

Stellamel.

Good luck my love (from an old Peak District exhile).

TidyBush · 05/01/2010 13:49

Just lurking around but wanted to say good luck!

Will pop later to check how you're getting on.

stellamel · 05/01/2010 13:53

Getting a bit more frequent and stronger, but still no pattern yet, so doing a bit of cleaning, bouncing on the ball, and stair walking!

ordered my car tax disk online, does that count brusselsprout?

Oooo how exciting. Fab midwife who agreed with mumsnet.

I'm waiting for my first caller on delivery suite to say 'I started a thread and they all say.....' I'm going to insist on looking after that woman

The very very best of luck Stellamel. Hope all goes well with you.

Yorky · 05/01/2010 14:00

Its over a year since I had a live birth thread on MN with DD and this is far more interesting! and scenic!
Good thing I had a friend round is is also an MNer

Good luck Stellamel

EdgarAleNPie · 05/01/2010 14:08

you go Stellamel - same gestation as me last one, and you too are doing the cleaning!

as others have said, your waters don't have to go first...

how long between contractions now?

good luck!!!

bouncing with excitement on your behalf

merryberry · 05/01/2010 14:09

big LOL at car tax disk online as internet shopping. will you look at them fondly for evermore I wonder

cakeforbrains · 05/01/2010 14:20

Good luck Stellamel!!
Will the baby get a snow-inspired name if he/she is born today?

EdgarAleNPie · 05/01/2010 14:23

news? is your DP back yet?

is the midwife on her way?

i found back massage really helped with cont-X if your Dps hands are warm enough....

and walking really helps to take your mind off it....

bouncing

shootfromthehip · 05/01/2010 14:24

Ooh I'm all excited for you too- keep us informed and all the very, very best

Wigglesworth · 05/01/2010 14:27

Ohh good luck Stella, this is exciting. Keep us updated.

MayorNaze · 05/01/2010 14:29

what an exciting thread! thinking of you and hoping it all goes well

stellamel · 05/01/2010 14:55

Coming regular and strong now. Midwife is in her hubbys 4x4 and hasn't got her kit or any gas and air! gah, I can do this but not without any pain relief, was relying on G&A, she's going to see if her colleague can drop some at her house and maybe our mountain rescue guys can go and collect it.

Not sure if paracetomol will cut it

OrmIrian · 05/01/2010 14:58

Good luck stella!

nigglewiggle · 05/01/2010 14:58

Easy for me to say, but try not to focus on the lack of pain relief. I had a HB with DD2 and I found the mouthpiece of the G&A too heavy to hold in my mouth and I needed both hands to cling onto DH. I gave up and did without and it was OK - honestly.

Indith · 05/01/2010 15:02

Good luck stella!

I gave up on gas and air too with dd, also a HB. The mouthpiece got in the way of shouting

You can do it

EdgarAleNPie · 05/01/2010 15:02

good, you're progressing well!

hoping the MW gets to you soon...

have you tried breathing out as you contract - not sure if it lessens the pain but its something else to think about.

and think that very soon you'll have a lovely baby to cuddle

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 05/01/2010 15:03

Might a warm bath help with the contractions, stella? Or back rubs?

I had ds2 and ds3 at home, and despite having needed gas and air, pethidine and a TENS for ds1's birth, I had only gas and air with the others, and then only for a couple of contractions at most.

Good luck - you'll have a great story to tell this dc about his/her arrival in years to come!

TheMollyRogerAndTheIvy · 05/01/2010 15:08

oh wow! Just checking in to wish you lots of luck x

SerenityNowAKABleh · 05/01/2010 15:08

Ooh, this is the most exciting thread ever! So many questions - is your DP still planning on going trekking to India? Has anyone started boiling water yet? [isn't that what they do in all the movies. Something to do with towels and water?]

All the best and keep MN updated!
