If you had a stretch and sweep that worked, how soon after it did somthing start to happen?

I am 41 weeks today with first baby. Had a sweep yesterday lunchtime. MW said cervix was 'favourable' although still quite thick. Had some very dull period type aches last night, but now nothing seemingly happening at all. The MW said it could take up to 48 hours for anything to happen, but just wondered if anyone had experience of being in a situation like me, with nothing doing and then labour suddenly kicking in?
I am booked in for another sweep next Tuesday and induction next Thurs, if nothing happens, but am just tired of waiting now!!
TIA.

Took about 36 hours after 2nd sweep at 40+12 with DS3. First sweep made a show appear but nothing happened after that. Second sweep was more sore vigorous and certainly did the trick! I had a fab delivery.

Good luck to you !

But you will never know if it was the sweep that tipped you into labour!!! All you can say is that the majority of women will labour within 48 hours of having a sweep, no evidence that it was the sweep that did it. Worth a try though imo.

I went into labour abt 12 hrs afterwards but was told at the sweep that the cervix was nearly effaced and 3cm dilated so nearly ready to go anyway. Good luck

Had a sweep at 39 weeks with my second baby (had been having contractions that morning but they stopped for several hours and the midwives were desperate to get me out of the hospital that night, whether it was with a newborn or still pregnant).

DD was born 2 hours after the sweep!

jadey24 · 12/12/2009 20:17

Mine started pritty quick- I had the sweep around 6pm ish and the contractions started the following early morn around 4am

Parumpumpumtumm · 12/12/2009 21:45

Had a sweep on my due date, and had some period-type pains but not much else. MW said no chance the baby would be here within the week. 48 hours later DS1 was born. I will never know if it was the sweep that started things off but they are worth a go !

Parumpumpumtumm · 12/12/2009 21:45

Forgot to say good luck... very exciting times !

threeplusone · 14/12/2009 13:59

With my two VBACS within 36-48hrs after the sweeps i had a baby in my arms xx
Good luck xx

threeplusone · 14/12/2009 14:00

Ment to say both sweeps done at 40+1

rubyslippers · 14/12/2009 14:01

i had a sweep at 39 weeks and 2 hours later went into labour

had DD 7 hours after that, so 9 hours in total after the sweep

extremelychocolateymilkroll · 14/12/2009 14:56

I had a sweep 2-3 days before I was due and started to have contractions on the day I was due. Dd was born the next day. Good luck.

decafgirl · 16/12/2009 16:05

I'd started niggling on on the Friday morning, it went away on the saturday so I went to the cinema (!) then I had a sweep at 2.30 ish in the afternoon on the Sunday, then forced myself upon DH and it worked a treat as went into labour within the hour. However, DS took a further 11 hours to arrive but that's a whole other story...!

All going really well! Thanks for your advice. xxx

She didn't actually tell me she was doing a sweep, but was rummaging around for a while, and I later found out that was what had happened. had period like pains straight after which i thought was just soreness cos she was a bit rough, but was obviously the beginning of contractions because ds1 came that night.

pugwash · 21/12/2009 20:06

I've got my first sweep tomorrow morning for my first. Was due on Friday. Baby's head was hovering above the brim on friday and I can't feel that there has been any downward movement .

Think I'll start on the raspberry tea and curry tomorrow!

fairylights · 21/12/2009 20:11

congrats Bex! all the best with your LO
for anyone else who is pondering this yes i had dd about 18 hours after having a sweep at 41+2, but i had also been taking a homeopathic thing and think it was a combo of the two.

houmousandcarrotsandwich · 22/12/2009 11:20

Sorry I'm kind of jumping this thread, but it a mildly related question

I'm due on Friday, and have a mid-wife appt on Thursday morning. Do you think she will want to sweep then? Only I'd rather wait for things to happen naturally (especially with Christmas), can I ask to wait?

annatw9 · 22/12/2009 14:14

I had a sweep at 4o weeks, i was already 3 cms dilated. it wasnt painful at all. nothing came of it, and i was induced 13 days later...
