Post birth skin to skin

I'm 38 weeks and had the health visitor out to meet me today. She kept going on about baby being delivered on to me, and how she felt that initial skin to skin was essential for breastfeeding.

Me and DH were planning on having baby delivered, cleaned and checked over before having some time alone/skin to skin/ try breast feeding. Health visitor wasn't too impressed by this!

Will it really matter if baby is checked over and cleaned up abit before? DH is abit squeamish about blood and I just want to know that baby is ok.

Any thoughts would be taken on board!
Thanks

I didn't have skin to skin with either of mine. My dh did it both times. Once they had been cleaned up a bit he took off his top and cuddled them against his chest. THe first time was because I had a cs and was feeling really sick afterwards. The second time after my vbac I was just so tired after 18 hours of labour that I just wanted a moment to recover. I did hold/ breast feed both of them in the recovery area though

Some people feel an overwhelming sense of love as soon as their baby is born. I didn't although I was happy to see them. The bond I felt was more like a slow burn which increased over the first few days and weeks. There is no right way to feel immediately after giving birth. Wait and see how you and your husband feel and play it by ear

BTW - my lack of skin to skin didn't affect my ability to bf and I fed both my dc for over a year

oh my goodness sprouting, which comments are you referring to that are really undermining to breastfeeding? are they on this thread?

I ended up with em-cs, so no opportunity for immediate skin to skin and DD was cleaned up (not totally clean, just wiped down I think) while I was being put back together - never stopped her launching herself straight at my nipple as soon as she was brought to within a metre of me in the recovery room
