Do you get offered a C Section if you've already had one?

Hi all,

Please don't jump on me for this one!!!

I've just had my first baby and would like another asap. I had Gestational Diabetes, was induced (it didn't work at all!) and then had an emergency C Section. I've since developed a fear of giving birth naturally.

My question is this: As I've already had a section and will deffo get GD again, will they offer me an elective C Section?

I know this is not politically correct, but it's the way I want to go if possible. Anyone in the know?

Yes. Some consultants, and some hospitals, are more pro-VBAC than others, but if you have had a previous c-section you should be entitled to insist on one if that is what you want.

I had an elective cs for my second child after an emergency one for my first. I went in prepared to fight for it, but the hospital were happy to book me in without too much argument (they just said "Have you thought about a VBAC?"). If you can show them that you have done some research and know the facts, and you are making an informed decision, they should go along with that.

Remember that you can always ask to get a second opinion from a different consultant if need be.

And don't be so ashamed of your choice! It is your body and your decision - you shouldn't need to apologise for it!

Thanks so much TuttiFrutti, it's always great to have some feedback and thanks for the words of support ;)

I did some research on the web this morning and also found out that as I had GD and will get it again for sure, the baby will have to come on time....they won't use drugs to induce you after a C Section. Soooo unless baby number 2 arrives early, I think it's pretty much guaranteed. Phew!

I agree with tuttifrutti. I had a section first time because DD was breech. I am booked in for a second section in December. I went in pepared for a fight too! But they were quite happy to book me in, after asking if i had any thoughts on VBAC. i just stuck to my guns and insisted i had made my mind up.

Good luck i hope you get the birth you want and don't be ashamed! Your body, your birth, your choice. All the best.

Maybebaby23, can I ask if they allowed you a section purely because your first birth was a section or do you have other medical issues? Also if you don't mind me asking where in the country are you planning on having the baby?

I had a c section first time as ds was also in the breech position. I wasn't aware that I had a choice second time. I just assumed that I would have to have a vaginal birth unless there are specific problems. If given the choice I would seriously consider having another c section.

I had my first by csection (maternal choice due to having issues with thought of VB). My consultant was happy to listen to my reasons for wanting second section and agreed to it. Think it helps if you're clear on the pros/cons etc so able to have a reasonable discussion about your reasons.
