what if a sieve isn't enough...

with dd1 there was a lot of the runny type of number 2 emerging. wouldn't like to think what would happen if this got into a birthing pool. a sieve is surely not gonna be able to deal with that?

is there no-one willing to speak about this?

Am worrying myself. DP thinks that he's going to be the one 'fishing' but I read somewhere that the midwives have some sort of yellow sack for all the mucky stuff.

The sieves are quite fine, I should've thought they would deal with most stool. The other thing you could do I suppose is take a large dose of castor oil or magnesium or vitamin C once you're in labour - that should ensure that you mostly empty your bowels. I'm planning on taking some magnesium as muscles need it to relax following contractions so I'm thinking kill two birds with one stone

i am worrying about this too, although i am not planning a waterbirth. with ds1 it did happen with Ds2 it didnt, but i farted so wondering what will happen this time, i am nearly 38 weeks and drinking orange juice like no ones business to try and stay "regular"

I managed to clear myself out [ahem] before I got in the pool so it wasn't an issue. Also after you've had the baby, won't it be the midwives/DH clearing up, so you don't really need to worry about the sieve vs other implements - and at the time you probably won't even notice/care

I think the majority of woman tend to poo in early labour ie before you get in the pool.

Don't worry about it, whatever happens the MW will have seen it before - and probably worse!

I always find it funny that so many of us worry about this! But we do!

Am coming up to birth number 3 & have no idea whether I pooped or not during the first two, I thought I had but the midwives said that it just felt like it but that there wasn't anything.
I did drink lots of fruit juice beforehand and got the almighty squits in the early stages that I think cleaned me out completely as I didn't go for about 4 days after the birth!!

Never has a waterbirth but have heard they are fab. Not sure I would find it particularly zen to have a midwife wading about the pool with a large sack though....

Whatever happens, as per previous posts I'm sure they will have seen worse!
