I just wanted to flag up this wonderful place for all of you living in the Leicestershire area.

I had ds2 there 8 weeks ago and still can't get over the difference in care from ds1's birth in hospital 3 years ago.

I'm not sure that everyone is made aware that they have the option to go there by their midwives, and I feel the need to spread the word.

That's all.

Ohhh it's beautiful there. I rave about the place.# It is like a bloody hotel! And it's NHS!

And did you know that if you have to give birth in one of the Leicester city hospitals, you can still go to St Mary's afterwards for aftercare and BF support? There are only 8 beds, there is no hustle, bustle, shouting, loudness - it's fab.

rachels103 · 04/09/2009 20:39

Why doesn't everyone have access to such care though, that's what I want to know? (Money, or lack of it, in the NHS of course, but in principle it would be wonderful)

I had dd1 there 5 years ago now and am glad to see it has fought off its threats of closure. I had a perfect water birth there .
I am continualy surprised that people do not take this option as they are apprehensive about the lack of hi tech equipment. For me I would be scared of being in just such an environment if low risk.
I have found better, difficult I know but Okehampton Maternity Unit in Devon as it is even smaller only a few years old. It has en suite rooms and the team leader is amazing as are the rest of her staff, but she really is exceptional.
I would like to say hooray for all of these type of units for the fantastic job they do.

Tis indeed Fab there! I gave birth both times in Leicester and then transferred. Great advice, amazing food, would def recommend.

cyteen · 11/09/2009 20:55

Yes, I loved St Marys so much. Ended up having to transfer to LRI for the final half hour of DS's delivery (tardy boy) but went straight back to Melton the next day for their excellent breastfeeding support and TLC. It really is brilliant.

I was very surprised that, out of the 7 couples in our NCT classes, only DP and I had even heard of St Marys. Then again, when I was there the place was full to bursting so it's obviously doing something right in the promotional stakes

MiniMarmite · 11/09/2009 22:11

A friend of mine gave birth there and raves about it too

lydiathetattooedlady · 12/09/2009 18:52

im another who loved st.marys! i had to have ds in notts qmc but transferred within 4 hours! lovely staff both midwives and assistants and the grub is delish!

I particularly loved the way the food comes out plated, with your name on it. Not out of a clearly microwaved plastic tray. And if you order ham salad, you get a MAHOOSIVE chunk of Real Ham. A jacket potato comes in the foil it was oven baked in.

I think, personally, that the food is so ample and so good because they assume from the start that you are breastfeeding - so they feed you appropriately from the start.

They are fine, by the way, if you aren't breastfeeding.

cyteen · 12/09/2009 19:39

Yeah, I'm gutted I couldn't eat anything while I was there due to my appalling piles and sore stitches. The food smelled lovely, I just couldn't sit upright to eat it!

duchesse · 12/09/2009 19:48

There's one near us, widely known as the "Honiton Hilton". Sounds very similar to your place.

happyjules · 12/09/2009 23:47

Cyteen, I know what you mean.
I had only moved to Leicestershire at 7 months. On my first meeting with my comminity MW she only mentioned LRI and The General. It was only when I screwed up my face did she mention St Mary's, even though my Devon hand held notes showed I had booked into OMU at that point .

rachels103 · 13/09/2009 09:32

Colditz...you're making me wistful for the food now! The lasagne was stunning!

happyjules, that's well shit I was lucky as someone I knew had recently had her baby there so I'd already heard all about it, and when I told my MW that's where I wanted to go her eyes lit up and she said 'yes yes St Mary's is brilliant'.

I get the impression a lot of people are still not confident being outside a maternity unit in a hospital. Having said that, my experience of LRI was fine as was several of my friends'.

lydiathetattooedlady · 13/09/2009 20:51

rachels i had the lasagne too it was yum. it came in a massive dish, with a big bowl of chips (naughty!) and a big bowl of salad i couldnt eat it all dp and dd polished it off! when i was in qmc the food was awful! i was given chicken hot pot with veg when at qmc under obs, my sister asked why it was grey and smelt like sausages bleurgh...i still have the random photo i took of it on my phone!

Hi all,

I live in Melton and so had planned to have the baby there but was wanting to get some feedback on what people thought of their midwives as I had my Antenatal appointment this morning and felt it was a bit rushed etc.

Let me know how you felt please...!

lydiathetattooedlady · 15/09/2009 10:17

how far along are you? IME the appointmetns in the beginning can seem quite rushed but once you hit the 34 week mark they do tend to take thier time. i had various things flagged up, large for dates, early cx etc but they were fab sorting me out with extra scans, and they're alwaya more than happy to see you out of appointment time if you're worried. couldnt have baby thier but was transferred within 4 hours. my midwife at the ante-natal was lovely but dont think i can use name on here??!!

blondnc · 15/09/2009 11:01

Hi there,

I am just gone 26 weeks and it is my first pregnancy so was just a bit worried that it might have been like that all the time!

I have heard good reviews from friends so I just think I was a little ambushed. Hopefully she was just busy and I hope that she would be able to spend some more time with me

cyteen · 15/09/2009 19:57

I had all my antenatal appts in Leicester and tbh most of them were pretty rushed. Think caring but brisk The midwives who attended me at St Marys during my labour were great and really paid attention to me.

wysewoman · 16/04/2010 08:52

Hello,

I have just yesterday had my first meeting with my midwife. I live in Loughborough. She didn't mention St Marys and booked me into the Kensington birth centre at Leicester and i will be goign to LRI for my scans etc.

I then went home and saw my first mention of St Marys in one of the leaflets she gave me. Melton is about the same distance from me as Leicester and I think this centre sounds more in tune with my ideologies.

Can anyone tell me, do St Marys also do the scans and tests or are they just there for the actual delivery? Also, i see there have been some issues with the centre recently. Can i change my booking to St Marys or are things still up in the air?

Can alyone also tell me what parentcraft / birth classes are available in the Loughborough and surrounding area as I understand that the NHS ones are stopping apart from one 1 hr session.

Any info appreciated. :-)

Thanks
Melissa

Hi There, I had my first Midwife appointment yesterday as was asked to choose where i wanted my baby, to be honest, I hadnt researched as i thought she would go through this with me. In the spare of the moment, I chose QMC Birthing centre but i'm now thinking I want to go to St Mary's.

Is it too late for me to change my mind?
