How quick is 2nd labour?

Hiya,
Im currently 23weeks (ish) preg with 2nd child. With 1st ds, I never even knew i was in labout, thought it was just painful pelvis probs lol. Went to hospital to get stronger painkillers and was told i was about 2-4cm dilated (which also means i was in labour for a long time before i even got there). On way to hospital, contractions were timed at every 4 minutes!!
I would love to stay home that long again this time around, but is it sensable for 2nd timers?

Midwife told me that it is common to have 2nd be half time of first - was true for me, 6hrs and then 3 hrs.
Best of luck.

My 1st labour was 4 hours & I was 7cms within an hour or so of the 1st contraction.2nd labour was 1.5 hours, from waters going to giving birth-I only remember having half a dozen contractions & spent 9 minutes pushing.Only just made it to hospital!

To be safe,I wouldn't hang around at home unless you definately want a home birth.I was expecting a fast birth but was totally shocked at the speed dd2 arrived in.

Good Luck

Does anybody know of any good websites where I can buy a tens machine?

BEKsmum · 06/07/2005 19:35

jofeb04, I'm two weeks behind you with my 2nd as well and after reading this I don't know if I feel better or worse

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy, what date are you actually due?

miam · 06/07/2005 19:36

First was 38hrs, second only 10 - by far the shortest time and easiest of the 4.

ZoeC · 06/07/2005 19:39

first time 3 day posterior labour, second time 3.5 hours from first contraction to delivery

Frizbe · 06/07/2005 19:42

Oh crikey my 1st was only 8hrs start to finish...the 2nd should be quicker then! argh! hope I get there in time for drugs!

bambi06 · 06/07/2005 19:44

mummybigtummy you can hire the tens machine which is better off financiallly, i think i hired mine for a month and you can add extra weeks if needed

lilibet · 06/07/2005 19:55

first labour 7 hrs 10 mins
second labour 1 hr 50 mins
third labour 6 hrs 30 mins

And the third was by far the best!

popsycal · 06/07/2005 20:00

first labour was induced.......aroind 4 hours
second was spontaneois - aout 35 mins

popsycal · 06/07/2005 20:01

sweetkitty · 06/07/2005 20:09

Thanks gals my DP has just passed out!!

My first labour 4 hours 20 mins (waters broke)

Second one (let you know in January!) 2 hours would be lovely, have told DP to get himself a book!

starrynight · 06/07/2005 20:38

My first was 23 hrs and 2nd 27 hrs (fgs)

starrynight · 06/07/2005 20:39

And 3rd was only about 9 or 10!! So was a walk in the park (hahaha)

lou33 · 06/07/2005 20:40

first was 2 hrs 20 from first contraction to delivery, second was 1hr 50, 3rd and 4th were faster still

Dahlia · 06/07/2005 20:42

First was 6 hours start to finish, second was 1 hour.

logic · 06/07/2005 20:43

First labour was 9 hrs 50 mins, the second was 1 hour 50 mins. Trust me, the first labour was 10 times easier and nicer! You do not want to go 0-10 cms dilated in just over an hour. It hurts - baaad. Even so, I still had time to get to the hospital and climb into the birthing pool before the pushing started so I wouldn't worry too much.

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 06/07/2005 20:45

im going to be having number 2 in october and have been wondering the same thing.... is it best to go to hospital at the first signs of pains?! im about 25 minute trip in rush hour traffic, or would i be sent home again? No experience as was indiced with JEss!

Miaou · 06/07/2005 20:53

First one - 16 hours
Second one - 8 hours
However had an epidural both times which I think probably doubled the length of labour - so how long will this next one be, I wonder?

My mum - no. 1 8 hours, no. 2 2 hours, no. 3 40 mins!

lou33 · 06/07/2005 21:14

logic, am with you there on the pain factor, tho i think i would prefer to keep my fast labours over a 24 hour one

christie1 · 10/07/2005 02:25

first one 24 hours, second one ( born 15 months later) 3 hours, doctor almost didn't make it, nurses all ran out of the room searching frantically for doctor leaving me and dh and a medical student who looked like she was going to pass out according to dh then she ran out too! All this was unknown to me who was busy with other things at the time, like labour. Short sweet and really don't even think I pushed at all, baby just sort of shot out on it's own! Moral, don't wait too long to go to hospital, or call midwife, however you are doing it.

Catsmother · 10/07/2005 11:35

1st was 4 hours ..... 17 days late, I turned up to be induced, was already 4cm dilated and asked if I'd felt any contractions ? .... "errr, no, apart from BH". Waters were artificially broken, and also given oxytocin drip ..... no drugs, just TENS machine. Was feeling so smug as it definitely wasn't the worst pain I'd ever felt (that was when I hurt my back, and also spasms during bouts of IBS).

2nd was 21 hours ..... waters broke naturally .... "back to back" labour, TENS machine felt as good as useless. Tried pethidine, and then, bliss, an epidural (which I'd always been scared at the thought of, but was desperate). Eventually taken to theatre for CS, when, at very last moment, DD decided to put in an appearance and was born on very narrow and uncomfortable surgical bed/table, with me flat on my back. All I kept groaning during the experience was " I thought second labours were supposed to be quicker.." !

Mind you, there was 13.5 yrs between the 2 .... maybe that had something to do with it.

Maddison · 10/07/2005 18:24

First labour was 15 hours

Second labour was 2 hours - I joked to dh on the way to hospital that it would be great to be 8 cm dilated - was fully dilated when we got there and was only in the delivery room 6 minutes when ds2 made his appearance

IME second labour was quite a nice experience as far as labours go ....
