Please please please tell me everything you know about prolonged rupture of membranes

I have a birth thread but sadly no labour yet to go in it.

Waters went yesterday morning very first thing, so about 36 hours now. Have now been to hospital for monitoring, baby seems fine, heart trace fine, moving lots.

Obstetrician was very concerned that I was refusing induction and thought I should stay in there and then.

I opted to go back in tomorrow for further monitoring, but am feeling rather at sea to be honest. I will definitely go for induction on Thursday if nothing has happened by then, but my home birth may well be scuppered already.

Please advise me.

Oh dear,hope your contractions start soon.
thursday seems like a long way away though seeing as your waters went yesterday.At what point will you accept the obstetricians advice?
Obviously your homebirth is important to you,but often it is not the best thing,only if there are no complications.Obviously with ruptured membranes they chances of infection are higher.Anyhoo you know all this.
What do your midwives think?

As you were planning a homebirth I'm figuring you've probably seen this site, but figured it wouldn't hurt to bring it up again in case.

I've no personal experience of PROM, but from reading around the general guide is to not allow ANYTHING to go back up there as it dramatically increases the risk of infection. I would take it as a good sign that you're still loosing plenty of water - it is meant to be self replenishing and a continuous downward flow will make it harder for any bacteria to find their way up.

How long you wait before accepting induction is a very personal choice. I honestly don't know what I would do in that situation (although I'd probably hold out beyond 24 hours - then again DD was born as a breech baby at home after we decided to follow the advice of an experienced MW in preference to a consultant...) and would probably be highly dependent on how I felt at the time.

AIMS may also be able to give you some good advice, or point you at where to find some - I've followed more breech stories, but Beverly Beech does seem to be able to work minor miracles on a regular basis.

Here's hoping things get going over night, though, and you don't need to worry about all of this tomorrow

NICE say it ok to wait up to 96 hours (4 days).

NICE used to say that, but they changed it to recommending induction after 24hrs. I had PROM with my first, planned HB there too.

Latent labour started the thurs am, waters broke thurs pm...Went in for monitoring/check etc on the Sat and ending up agreeing to induction/augmentation of the labour.
I was offered routine IVABS which I declined.

If want to try and stick with the HB plan then no internals AT ALL because of infection, watch for fever/smells/feeling unwell.

I know of someone who recently became very unwell with infection and complications after PROM, but going in and starting the interventions carries its own risks too

Nipple twiddling seems to do nothing whatsoever for me. I might get one slightly stronger BH from it. Am at a loss. Seriously considering going in for induction today.
