Anyone have a retained placenta with their 2nd but not 1st delivery?

Just curious. Dc2 is due in January and I didnt have this with dd. A few of my friends have had recently and I am very worried.

If it does happen can you request for it to be removed by operation rather then manually??

Yes I had with my 2nd but not 1st. Cord snapped. If there was to be a next time I would go with a natural 3rd stage.

I wouldn't worry too much I think the odds are about 2%.

Manual removal is horrific, I wasn't aware it could be removed any other way?

I wonder if they can operate to remove it?? I defo would never want a manual removal.

Maybe I will go for a natural 3rd stage. I want to bf this one. Thanks.

Wondering if this is what I had with 2nd..? Basically had DD2 and majority of placenta stayed behind. Is that what "retained placenta" is? Anyway, midwifes were all getting quite concerned as it wasn't expelling at all and going into 3rd phase, so they asked for a consultant to come quickly as they thought they would have to do a C-section type op to remove. I thought it was ridiculous as I had said I planned to breastfeed and they hadn't even put my daughter to me. So I asked for them to do that to see if that would help - within 5 minutes the placenta was out - well, as much as could be - the rest came out over the next week. Now 16 weeks with my 3rd so wondering what is in store for me!

I had it with my third, but not my first 2.
I had a natural 3rd stage and the consultant afterwards told me, if I had another one, I should have the managed 3rd stage with the injection.

I don't think it is that common (although 2 of my friends had it as well)

I had an ERPC - not a CS type - not heard of that

Tommy - Was is an ERPC?

lynneevans51 - Yes, that too is a retained placenta. I want to bf so hopefully I will be ok this time aswell.

Evacuation of the Retained Products of Conception - used to be callled a D&C or a scrape.
Basically the doctor just scraped his finger around the uterus to get the retained bit out (sorry if TMI!)

Had this with my third - big hemoragge. Had to have an epidural for the placenta to be removed but almost had to have it removed with no pain relief due to the blood loss. Hope this doesn't happen to you.

Erm, I had mine manually removed and it wasn't that bad apart from the giant torch they were shining up my jacksie . No pain though.

But the placenta had come away from the wall and then cervix closed up again so it was easyish to hook out [vom]. Was v early delivery, am told its more common if prem. Were your friends giving birth early? Have the injection anyway(I did with my first and no probs, couldn't with my second, def hope to with this one!)

I had parts retained after my 2nd was born. Probably because she was tugging the flipping thing out rather than helping it along

I had this with my second but not with my first baby. I think its quite rare - they said it probably happened with me because the labour was so fast (3 hours in total). Its good that you're finding out a bit about it beforehand though, as I had never heard of retained placenta before and nobody really explained what was going on, and mentions of hemorrhaging and going into theatre scared the life out of me!

I had it removed manually with an epidural. Not pleasant but not painful, the worst thing was not being able to hold DD for ages while I was waiting in operating theatre for someone to give me an epidural. I didn't realise you could have it removed with an operation?

To all - my memory may not be quite what it was. My experience was much more like iwouldgoouttonight as all stuff started saying things about hemorrhaging and having to go to theatre. I think I just presumed that it would mean an op - I mean ... what do you go to theatre for?!

So, there we are, I had it, but had no idea what was going on!!

happened to me.

not my first but with my second dd.
cord snapped and i haemorraged (sp) after trying my gdamn hardest to push it out. was utterly knackered and in end had manual removal..

im not one for scare mongering labour storys but it was more painful than the labour itself and wouldnt wish on anyone

im now pg with dc3 and have to be monitored and have blood taken (for what reason that is i dont know!) but terrified it will happen again

its not that common at all

i didnt have the op i had 3 doctors stick hand up me and pull it out whilst being prepped for theater
