HELP! Have my waters just broken whilst having sex?!

ok, this really is TMI for you but i am 38 weeks pg with dc2 (dc1 is out with grandparents!) and dh and i were just engaging in some hopefully labour-inducing sex, when suddenly there seemed to be an awful lot of fluid on the bedsheets - i guess probably it was only half a glass-a glass worth of clear liquid but i am pretty sure i wasn't weeing myself - but would i know if i was weeing myself? And wouldn't there be more fluid if it was my waters??

What does it smell like?

LuluMaman · 18/07/2009 15:20

it could be a leak of the hindwaters behind the babies head. if you were weeing yourself, you would be able to stop the flow, you can't do that with amniotic fluid

also, wee and amniotic fluid smell different

i would pop a pad in your knickers and give it a half hour or so to see if any more leakage

no more sex, just in case!

if your waters had fully gone there would have been a lot more, so could well just be a leak.

you do have increased discharge though in later pregnancy, and more during foreplay/sex, so there could be a whole lot of fluids sloshing around!

you could also of course call labour ward and ask for their advice!

well, it doesn't really smell like wee to me, more vaginal..?!
its been an hour now and no more leaks really.. am kind of holding off calling hospital as i am hoping for a HB (had one before) and can't seem to get hold of my doula to ask advice, but don't want to end up in hospital unless i really have to go there.. although happy to go if necessary.
can a mw tell whether your waters have broken or not from a v e??

yes a MW can tell if your waters have broken from a VE. however, in my non medical opinion, i don;t think you have had a full rupture ... the fact it has stopped and it was not a huge amount indicates it is more likely to be a leak from higher up , and that can reseal and your waters replenish themselves.

you can call labour ward to let them know, as it might be a sign things are getting ready , but you do not have to go in for a VE if you don't want one

if your waters have fully gone, you will be advised to have an induction of labour 24 hours after rupture if no spontaneous labour

sounds like hindwaters? I had this with DD and didn't leak any more once it had come out - I think if it's main waters they carry on leaking? But you do need to tell midwife I think as you will need checking - you can get an infection once any waters broken IIRC. Also I was in proper labout within 2-3 hours of mine going (at 38 weeks). Good luck!!

thanks lulu - i did call labour ward in the end and the mw pretty much said what you said! There doesn't seem to be any more leaking so am just going to carry on with life as usual unless anything else happens..
i was assuming this baby was going to be late so now think i will be a bit more impatient if nothing happens for days/weeks!Ah well

well, fingers cross you labour sooner rather than later..

fairylights · 18/07/2009 16:04

ooh thirtysomething, that gives me hope that something might actually happen soon-ish - thanks!
