2 vessel cord+IUGR at 21 wks?

I had an anomaly scan last week. Turns out I have a 2 vessel umbilical cord (i.e just one artery instead of one) and the baby is already small for dates..
I am devastated - it is my last pregnancy and I was hoping for an uneventful one this time and a VBAC as my DD was delivered last August by em C-section due to severe pre-eclampsia.

Anyone with a similar experience at all? I am reading that 2 vessel cord can be just fine if there are no other abnormalities (and at this stage there aren't).However, if it is IUGR,....???

what is the plan? are they going to scan you every couple of weeks now? Do dopplers?

I had this. Not picked up till much later. DD does have lots of probs but does have genetic reason for that so not just iugr

My bf went through same thing as you. Her dc was 2 lb 13 oz at 36 weeks but has developed as expected with no probs so far (nearly 2)

I think the management now is the key thing and to intervene if concerns

Any indications as to whether it is symmetric or asymmetric iugr? What are baby's head measurements like?

They haven't officially diagnosed it as IUGR. Am having another scan next Tuesday. Here are the measurements:

bpd 47,hc171, ac129, fl32

Then there is a note on fetal stomach being small. No weight.

As for doppler - blood flow appears normal.

Re plan - will find out at next scan on Tuesday which will be performed by the same consultant who sectioned me last time.

I've just looked at what u/s measurements should be at 21 weeks:

BPD -52,HC-187,AC -164,FL -36

I don't think that's too far off at all. Scans aren't bang on - quite a big error margin iirc. And out of all the measurements, I think its a good thing that the smallest one by far is ac. And you say that is the only thing pulled out on yr notes as a concern

Easier said I know but try not to worry and see what tuesday brings. The main thing is to monitor that yr baby is growing. And its good you are going to be scanned by same consultant cos that will give you a better indication of that

Thanks,pixiemason. I proper psyched myself up today- started watching youtube videos of premature babies while at work, and googling... Will stop moaning now and wait for Tuesday.

Irbit don't forget that the measurement chart you compared your DC's measurements to is averaged, so some babies will be bigger and smaller than those stated and still be within the norms.

Yeah, i know. But with my previous history, it sounds too good to be true, you know? Saying that even though my DD was diagnosed with IUGR, she was healthier than I was., and now 10 months later,no signs of any problems...I think what really gets me that my VBAC chances are getting smaller by each second because in case they need to get the baby out early, they can't induce me...

I have 7 week old twins and one had a 2 vessel cord identified at 20 week scan with no other anomolies detected. We were scanned regularly anyway as it was twins and he actually ended up measuring bigger than the girl at all other scans and was then born 5oz smaller. As the others have said it's not an exact science. Having said that I didn't relax about it totally until I saw him. Not helped by registrar muttering vaguely about abnormalities and scaring myself witless with Google! They were born at 35 weeks and are doing really well. Good luck with it all.
