It's his birthday today and was giving him the story about how it all came about. There was a bit of a moment.

I was talking about his heart rate slowing down, and the monitor beeping and the cord being round his neck.

However. I couldn't explain why the cord being round his neck made his heart slow down - previously I suppose I'd thought it stopped him breathing (yes go on, laugh!!) but maybe it compresses the oxygen supply in his blood - or something - someone please tell me how this works before he gives up and realises thinks I am thick

TIA!

I think its a bit of both not sure though.

I think the cord being compressed against the neck causes less blood to flow to the baby???

(little chuckle at him 'breathing' in there )

I think the cord round the neck causes less blood flow and therefore less oxygen. It's also acting as a sort of brake I think and stopping the baby descending. Meanwhile the uterus is still conracting and squashing the baby and the cord is getting more compressed - which is why the baby needs to get out asap.

Many, many thanks you patient ladies

See sometimes I am so, y'know, intellectual that I miss the big picture...
