38 weeks, have to go for scan as mw thinks baby is breech. If he is, is it an automatic c section? Do they try anything else first, I have heard scary stories about trying to turn the baby & mw won't tell me until she knows for sure.

Most external versions are done at about 37 weeks and the success rate has partly to do with the experience of the person(s) performing it. Some midwives will suggest trying it, feeling that if it works it beats having surgery, some have little or no experience so they won't.

Often it will be an automatic section but it will also depend on whether or not your midwife has any experience with breech births. Techniques for breech birth are different and it really is a dying art.
