Is it normal to still be bleeding 8 weeks after delivery?

Hi, my dd is now 8 weeks old and I am still having bright red bleeding which is fairly heavy at times. I went for a scan after 5 weeks because the bleeding was so heavy, and they said there were still some clots inside but they were happy to let in come out naturally. The bleeding slowed right down and became darker for a while but over the last week has increased again. I am not feeling ill or having any pain so I assume there is no infection. Is it worth contacting GP again, or is there no point as I have already had a scan? TIA

Could it be your period? I bled after ds1 for 5 weeks, had one day clear and then came on my period.
If I were you, I would definitly get it checked just to be safe

Be checked just to be safe.

It's not abnormal to bleed for this long but usually it's slowed down and changed colour significantly if you are still bleeding at this point.

Are you doing too much. I bled for 6 weeks and it slowed down, turned pink, then brown etc but if I did too much it turned bright red again.

Does it smell at all offensive?

francesrivis · 12/04/2009 10:23

No there is no offensive smell. Not sure if I am doing too much - just going on as normal really. LBB - I did wonder if it could be a period, but it seems unlikely as I am bfing and after my dd1 my periods did not come back for 5 months. Perhaps I will ring the doctor after the weekend just to be sure.

My period came back around this time despite exclusive bfing so it is possible.

Having said that you are better getting it checked out.

A woman on my post-natal thread is exclusively bfing and has started her period, and she must be around the 9/10 week mark too.

Like you say, it's probably not an infection, I became infected after ds2 was born (9 weeks ago) and felt like I was still in labour, my body was pushing and I was losing lots of blood at these points, so I think you'd know if it was that, but you relly should get it checked out, just to make sure the blood isn't coming rom anywere else

Yes was feeding every 2hrs day and night when my periods returned at 16 weeks. BFing doesn't necessarily stop the return of periods.

yes i was bleading for about 10 weeks with all of mine, with ds2 then had a 4 week break then my periods returned & was bfing.
