Does anyone know if it would help tummy muscles recover of you were to wear some sort of girdle or tummy restraint(!) after the birth?

I was given one of those massive tubi-grip things to help my stomach muscles back together after the birth of DS. It was incredibly comfy to feel it all being pulled in, and I'm wondering if I should invest in something a bit more industrial this time around.

Don't they do something similar in the Netherlands?

hmm, im no expert but cant help but wonder if it might not help your muscles at all!! ok when wearing it the area prob looks better, but if the muscles arent having to work (to keep it all in!) , how is tone going to improve? - i thought musle tone (and appearance) only improves by using them...... but maybe im barking u p the wrong tree.....

..if it does work, do you know where i can get a full length body suit?!

Yup, they do sometimes use a corset type thing (Sluitlaken) in the Netherlands for a few days after birth to help close the stomach muscles. It stops that nasty feeling of your womb rolling about too. Here's a photo of the old school one, 'tis a demon to tie...

They used to be used for quite a long period but that was found to be counterproductive, 4 to 10 days is thought to be really helpful though.

Oh, Sluitlaken translates as 'closing sheet' by the way.

I wore a stretchy waist corset after DD was born (from Figleaves, and no, it was in no way sexy!!) Think I read about the benefits of wearing on on here somewhere. The MW did say that things pulled back to normal very quickly so maybe it did help - didn't have much in the way of fit stomach muscles beforehand so not down to good preparation!

Look at this

IwishIwasmorechocolatey · 07/04/2009 21:33

OMG! Have you seen how much they cost [bshoc]

But if it works...

IwishIwasmorechocolatey · 07/04/2009 21:59

Simple exercises work - and all they cost is a (little) bit of time

NorktasticNinja · 08/04/2009 09:24

Oh, I agree IwishIwasmorechocolatey!

There is absolutely no substitute for exercises. Wearing some sort of corset type arrangement for a few days after birth is a Good Thing but longer term use is definitely NOT.
