Has anyone experienced one off high BP in late pregnancy?

I am 38 weeks. I went for a routine MW appointment today and was swiftly sent to hospital. My BP was high, face and hands swollen and baby lying across ways (OP?).

I am now home and will be having BP checked on friday. I was planning a HB but have been told that this won't be possible if I have high BP again. Baby is now head down.

So I am looking for reassurance - has anyone else had one off high BP? And any thoughts on wether a HB WOULD be possible.....please.

My BP spiked at 37 weeks because we'd just had a very stressful day - did anything happen to spike it?

I was also sent to hospital but sent home again and the following week my BP had settled down. However, my waters broke a few days later and I had to be induced! So can't comment on the HB thing.

Good luck.

Thanks spongebrainbigpants. I had a stressful day yesterday but was feeling quite relaxed today!

Yes. I went in for SROM 3 days overdue and was treated so appallingly by the hospital that my bp went through the roof.

5 hours later I went into labour and bp was just slightly raised.

You can't be refused a HB, but I think it is wise to look into your suspected increased bp, and reassess the risks.

How do you know the baby id head down now?

Mine shot up because the midwife was incredibly annoying and she was doing a home visit and wouldn't leave. When I got to the hospital it came down again.

If they wrote OP on your notes, it means that the baby was head down but lying back to back with you, which is a less good position for delivery but still head down and fine. Acrossways would be recorded as "transverse" I think and would be a bigger deal at this stage of pg.

snowlight - By the time I got to the hospital the baby had moved into the head down position, I was checked 3 times and had a scan!!!

Agree with mrsboring. If you were anxious at the appointment (and what woman about to give birth isn't at least slightly anxious?) then that could artificially inflate it.

However, the swelling could be a concern.

OP means back to back. Is your placenta anterior do you know?

Labour may be a little bit longer as either the baby will use the early contractions to try and shift, or will not have the optimal exit, and there may be a delay there.

It is nothing to worry abou though, but you might like to spend as much time as you can on all fours, leaning forward and upright beforehand and in early labour so that gravity can help.

Baby was lying across ways! So not OP.

Mine was really high in one of my appointments but that was because there were so many people in the room. The times I had it tested after it was fine.

SnowlightMcKenzie · 11/03/2009 17:15

Ok, so what was the last thing written in your notes? And by how much had your bp spiked?

mondaymonday · 11/03/2009 17:16

Mine spiked once towards the end and feet started to get bit swollen - wasn't feeling stressed or anything, I think it's pretty normal

Wheelybug · 11/03/2009 17:25

Mine goes up and down at whim. Bizarrely is worse at home and by the time I get to hospital it goes down.

Yesterday my waters started going, a MW came out to check, BP was up so they sent me in to hospital, BP went down, they sent me home.

Can't comment on HB as they won't even let me near the MW unit let alone stay at home.

Good luck - hope it goes down.

The combination of swelling and HB could be an indication of pre-eclampsia, so you probably do want that watch. Eclamptic fits by all accounts are not a pleasant experience.
