Please tell me about your odd positioned babies who turned late please !

Found out on Friday that, despite DB2 fooling everyone from 28 weeks that s/he was head down s/he is still moving around and seems to be favouring an oblique position.

Have worried myself silly all weekend about possibilities of cord prolapse etc and constantly prodding the bump to try and work out what position its in.

I am 37+3 - any hopes of it settling any time soon (My Mum reckons none of me or my brothers settled until labour inc. my brother who kept going breech - I won't be able to see if this happens as I will booked for a c-sec on friday if issue hasn't resolved itself).

Oooh This was me!!
DS3 acted as though we was in the washing machine round and round he went.
Every time I saw a HCP he was in a different position.
I had to go to Day Assessment at 38 wks to have my blood pressure monitored, and the midwife checked the positioning and then called for somebody to recheck for her. Within half an hour he had moved from bum down to transverse lie. They did two scans to double check and admitted me there and then with tales of doom and gloom that it could be very dangerous for me to go home as I would not be able to get there quickly enough if I went into labour.. I had walked in that morning that's how close we live.

That was Friday morning. Baby was very active all weekend, but no more than usual for him IYSWIM. I had to wait until the specialist came in Monday to see what they would decide. Had a scan on the ward Monday morning and he was still the wrong way round. Walked down to the antenatal outpatients to see the specialist at lunchtime for them to manually turn him, I had to sign papers to say I understood it could cause me to go into labour, that I might need an emergency section and such.
I was really worried and in tears.

By the time I got there he had turned!

They sent me home that afternoon with a warning that he would properly turn again as he had been doing it all pregnancy, when I protested and said that they had insisted that it was too dangerous, they told me it was not dangerous at all and made me feel silly for believing them on the Friday and being worried all weekend.

When I went into labour, really early on at the first signs I went in and they scanned me to make sure he was still in the right place when he was they sent me home as It was progressing slowly and told me to come back when I thought I was ready, when they scanned me again and sent me to my delivery suite and it was all straight forward from there.

I think they called it a Loose Lay or Loose Lie as he found enough room to move so much.

One of mine turned breech at 28 wks, had an ecv (is that the right tla) and the consultant who did it (many won't) said no problem if he turned again, they could still move him back even in early labour. Is that helpful?

Thanks both - sorry I had to dash out.

That's good to hear - I'm assuming they wouldn't do an ECV on me because I have had a previous c-sec so presume it could put too much pressure on the scar and not sure if they do them for positions other than breech. As far as I know, it doesn't go as far round as breech (although from what I've read that's actually preferable to transverse/oblique).

Any more stories ??

all of mine have been breech oblique really late.
ds1 breech till 37 weeks then turned by himself
dd1 oblique turned herself at bout 38 weeks,had all the horror story of cord prolapse to worry about.
ds2 oblique til 37 weeks ,scanned & tried keeping me in but i wouldnt as still had xmas pressies to buy ,didnt waan miss my others at xmas,went home spent 3 days on all fours wiv bum higher or bouncing on birthing ball & then saw consultant & he had moved.
im 5 ft 4 in & all babies were around the 9lb 7oz mark if that helps

That's interesting fairygirl - I am only 5 foot and had been wondering whether it was a space issue - i.e. more space to spread out diagonally. That said, I don't think the baby is big if my growth scans have been accurate - just below average(dd was IUGR so only 4 lbs 9oz and had to come out early so I never really knew what she was doing !). Will try a bit of bum in the air - I'm seeing a MW tomorrow supposedly to talk about my VBAC birth plan but at least she might have a feel to see how the baby is lying and then back to consultant on friday (38 weeks) to get final verdict.....

Both mine were an unstable lie - dc1 did settle eventually then I had a long labour and a normal birth. dc2 turned and turned - they broke my waters when she was head down and started the syntocinon drip - I had two hours of contractions before she turned again and I had an emergency caesarean. If you really don't want a c section I am sure they will let you wait and see but you might have to wait in the hospital (I was there for 3 weeks) Good luck

Tahnks Nettee- to be honest, now I've got to this stage I'm fine about the c-sec element (had previous c-sec and wanted to VBAC but have reached the 'as long as baby is healthy it can come out how it wants' stage). Its more that I'm panicking about the risks of going into labour before they do the c-sec.
But, as they're saying c-sec at 39 weeks which is 1.5 weeks away then presumably they think I should get there without going into labour....

I think if they decide on friday to book me in for the following week I might ask if they'll do it a bit earlier for my sanity (I know its better to do a c-sec at 39 weeks rather than before but will see what tehy say).

oh yes, you're right ds1 did this! now, obv it is forever ago now lol, but I am pretty sure he didn't go properly head down and stay there til at LEAST 38 weeks
he kept going transverse/oblique then head down, the back to transverse and on and on.

but he did settle down, and he did come out mostly ok lol

ooh thanks YIS - This one seems to be spinning quite a bit which actually gives me some comfort that s/he is still moving around rather than fixed in an oblique position.

Will try and get MW to have a prod tomorrow and see what s/he is doing then.

Breech at 36 weeks

Did some OFP and went for a reflexology session to encourage him to turn
(very relaxing anyway)

He turned straight away and the birth was OK apart from it being a compound presentation.

This time I have been having lots of chiro to adjust the pelvis, and latest baby has been head down and engaged since week 32 or 33.

I am convinced chiro helps a lot with positioning.

Just a quick update - fingers crossed my worrying was for nothing. I saw a MW today and the baby had turned back to head down - not engaged yet so obv could still go wonky but she seemed to be quite happy with it. It is posterior so I need to get on my hands and knees etc....

DD1 transverse all the way through my midwife didn't seem concerned had her at 9lb 4oz at the 39wks. We didn't know if she had turned, only had contractions to push her out.

DD2 breach all the time had her turned at 39wks and then induced with at 41+2 and she was only 9lb 2oz.

DC3 like yours has been breach, head down and a unstable lie. When we saw the consultant last thursday baby was laying on it's side with backbone down my left side and head bent back against my right hip. I have been told to go the hospital as soon as i know i'm labour because of concerns with cord position.

I'm hoping when i go to the midwife for my 38wk check up on friday that it will be head down as i sometimes feel like it has engaged. If not i'm going to ask about induction as i have never had contraction and known i'm labour.

Like you i am 5ft 1in and i do think that they have more room sideways then top and bottom.

ahhh glad baby has turned wheely.
ds2 was posterior and came out that way too... labour wasn't too bad either. much, much nicer than ds1 despite the positioning

so, all on for vbac then????

Well have to run the gauntlet of the consultant clinic tomorrow (38 weeks) so if I get out of there without a c-sec date I'll begin to think it might actually happen. Keep your fingers crossed !!

Quick update - just seen consultant who confirmed still head down ! Yippee ! Not engaged yet though. I have until 40+10 to get this baby out or I have a c-sec, which seems fair enough.

that's good! and second babies often don't engage til much later, or even in labour anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.
