i am due an elective c section and have been told today that i cannot breastfeed for at least 6 hours afterwards due to the spinal and risk of spinal headache. My doctor said I have to lie flat on my back for at least 6 hours afterwards. I am not having a general. is it normal to have to wait this long? i want to bf and don't want my baby to have a bottle at all.

I breastfed both of mine, sitting up, within 30 minutes of leaving theatre. The first time the midwife got me in the right position, the second time I only needed a little help from DH. It really shouldn't be a problem. Good luck.

No. What you have been told is wrong. Is it a baby friendly hospital?

You should attempt the first feed within an hour of the birth (it doesn't matter how much if any actual feeding happens, just the opportunity plus skin to skin contact).

The mothers chest and heartbeat regulates the baby's, her temperature adjusts to keep the baby warm/cool and her body releases hormones in the baby that reduce stress.

Depriving the baby of that when it is so easy to enable is barbaric.

thanks these have been really helpful. i am in the middle east- i have found another hospital/ consultant. they do take the baby as it has to be v cold in the theatre, but you have the baby straight away to feed. apparently they put the baby in the nursery when you sleep as you are in a room alone and its safer for the baby. i am going to do a birth plan though anyway.
'the culture is different to ours as mums here don;t bf and want babies in nursery, so i can see i am a bit of a tree hugger out here

I had a spinal & attempted to feed in recovery...not that she was interested!

But the midwives etc fully supported it!

Milly, you may find you get more responce to your question in another topic, in it's won thread,,....

But yes, you should be able to request another c-section.

My midwife latched ds on within about 30 mins. dd had to wait a little longer as the stitching took longer. ds stayed pretty much on me until I left the hospital, whereas dd was in the basket for the short moments of time she wasn't feeding. I wouldn't like to have anyone take away my newborn.
