Think my waters are leaking - do I need to do anything yet?

Am 40+6 and have been experiencing very mild period-type pains most afternoons/evening for about 2 weeks now. I think my waters are (very gently)leaking and they are pink tinged. Am having very mild contractions lasting about 20-30 secs and averaging 3 mins apart. Would prefer not to go to hospital until I really need to. Do I need to call now or can I wait until contractions are stronger

Call now just to let them know, but tell them you would like to stay at home for awhile, do you have other dcs that need minded , if not relax and enjoy the surprise you can give everyone tomorrow
hope you have a good experience good luck

PlumBumMum · 17/02/2009 21:54

btw it prob is your water not everybodys go with a gush

me23 · 17/02/2009 21:57

you don't need to call them yet, I'd wait till contractions are lasting longer and more painful. If this doesn't happen within the next 24 hours I'd give them a ring. Do ring if you begin to have a temperature or feel unwell.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 17/02/2009 22:10

I'd ring just to let them know.

My waters went with a gush at 3am in the morning but I didn't ring the hospital until 6am (when we were up for the day thanks to ds1!) The wanted to check me over but there was no rush (we went in a few hours later) My temp and the baby's heart rate was fine so we were allowed home again.

As long as you're doing ok then there's no need to rush in but if the hospital know that things are moving they may be able to prepare (staffing etc) and anticipate.

Good luck! I'm very excited for you!!

Monkeygi · 17/02/2009 22:26

Ooh how exciting. Mine went with a gush at about 3 a.m too. I rang straightaway and was told to go back to bed and come in at 9 in the morning. I did, they sent me home again till the next day.

The hosp said I was right to call when I did though, so they could Be Prepared.

But I hadn't had any contractions at all.

Good luck!! Hope all goes well.

thehouseofmirth · 17/02/2009 22:40

I rang and they "advised" me to go in which is standard procedure but told them I'd hang on until morning. Don't fancy taxi there and back on my own as DH would have to stay here with DS. Going to take my temp now, just in case.

Ooh houseofmirth just realised it's you! Best of luck, and keep us updated!
I need the gory details on St.G's!

Mirry71 · 18/02/2009 13:36

Can I just ask what if no contractions but suspect waters may be very slightly leaking today - not a gush but the odd mild leak (sorry if TMI!). Is it nothing to worry about or do I need to ring midwife? Am 39 weeks....

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 18/02/2009 13:40

I'd ring them. If it is your waters then they'll want to know

PlumBumMum · 18/02/2009 13:58

Miry71 ring midwife my friends water were leaking long before she had contractions just mild bachache

Lulumama · 18/02/2009 14:00

you should ring so they know to expect you , or they might want you to come in for some monitoring, esp if labour has not started within 24 hours, you will be offered induction

but if it is a hindwater leak rather than a full rupture, that is different from a full rupture

Mirry71 · 18/02/2009 14:32

good idea...has all gone quiet again at the mo IYKWIM but as soon as it starts up again will do so. Am worried about being told to go in to be checked and then being sent home again having been made to feel stupid!.....

thehouseofmirth · 18/02/2009 14:35

Still here... went in this morning to be checked. MW thinks it was not my waters, though if it wasn't it's the most watery discharge in the history of watery discharge. She could stretch me to 2cm so something's happening very, very slowly. Still having contractions about 5-10 mins apart but only lasting 30 secs. I had forgotten how much they can hurt. Damn! A bit of bleeding since the internal.

I'm finding all the uncertainty really hard this time. With DS1 contractions started, got worse & (eventually) I had a baby. This is weird and also makes planning for DS1 really hard. Have got appt with consultant tomorrow to talk about section if this does't progress. Am not, not, not being induced! Also have scan on Friday. Hoping I don't need to keep either appointment, not least because I hadn't before thought through the implications of getting there when I am the only driver in the family!

BTW Fruity, last night and this AM so may babies had been born they'd had to shut Carmen Suite for deliveries and turned it to a post natal ward.

never worry about being embarrassed better being safe than sorry
they won't make you feel stupid, don't worry, I went in the night before my ds was due convinced something had leaked,as it was a bit slimy tmi, but they said wasn't waters, kept me there as I was due in the morn to be induced and was having contractions, but I wasn't in the least embarassed
good luck

thehouseofmirth · 18/02/2009 14:41

Mirry71 - don't worry about going to be checked, if that's what you want. They are used to it and the MW I saw was lovely & didn't make me feel silly at all.

FruitynNutty · 18/02/2009 16:36

oh how disappointing. Thought you'd be well on your way by now!
Re Carmen Suite, they won't let me in anyway so I have no choice but to use labour ward Shame if you can't use it though, I really hope you get to use it!

FruitynNutty · 20/02/2009 08:52
