Is it possible for your body to 'forget' what to do?

OK, I'm 40+4 today with my 6th baby and had a show on Friday along with quite violent diarrhoea (sorry, can't spell that!). Midwife was quite convinced I was about to start labour very soon - the head is engaged (amongst other things). I'm still waiting for contractions to start! All day Friday I felt a lot of pressure and bachache and thought things were imminent, but still came to nothing. I have walked for miles to see if I could get things going, and had a few strong tightenings but no more than that, and no regularity to it.

My 4 dds are all grown up, and ds (5) was induced because he was in distress, so I've not laboured naturally for 18 years.

So can anybody shed any light? Could my body just not remember how to do it?

I don't know really but a friend of mine who had an 11-yr gap between her last two said that the last labour was more similar to her first one.
Can't remember all the details now but we had lots of conversations at the time about how it was like she had a first labour all over again, not what would be expected from a mother of 3 already.

Good luck
