Some girls names we are pondering over.....

Just wondering what people think of when they hear these names.....

Juliet
Genevieve
Portia
Gretchen
Francesca
Emilia
Helena
Anastasia
Alexandra

We have a short surname so the longer names sound really good but I worry that they can come across as pretentious (such as Anastasia - although very pretty I think).

Any thoughts.

Many thanks.

Juliet, Francesca, Anastasia (love it!) and Alexandra (great name, Alex lovely, too) - all lovely

Not keen on Gretchen, but love Greta

Don't like Portia (pretentious), Helena or Emilia at all

Not sure about Genevieve. Like Jennifer, it tends to get shortened to Jen/Jenny, which I really don't like.

Out of that list, I like Juliet a bit.

mrsmattie - you don't think Anastasia sounds pretentious - that is my big fear.

No, personally not. I think it's incredibly pretty.

Sounds like the role call at a very posh ballet class!

Ecmo · 12/01/2009 19:25

The Anastasia's I know have both been shortened to Taisy so be prepared for some people to do that.

artichokes · 12/01/2009 19:28

I love Alexandra. It is classic and versatile (i.e. you could call her Alex, Lexi, Alexa, Xandra).

Lizzylou · 12/01/2009 19:30

OK, my honest opinions:

Juliet - Lovely
Genevieve - Again, lovely
Portia - No, just think of a Persian Cat, sorry!
Gretchen - Too Sound of Music
Francesca - Lovely
Emilia - Lovely
Helena - Again, lovely
Anastasia - Lovely
Alexandra - Lovely

If I had to pick one I'd go with Alexandra.
That was nice, choosing girl's names, I only have boys!

madamecastafiore - you really made me laugh. I know what you mean but because our surname is so short and simple, we kind of need quite a lovely several syllable long name to liven it up.

I know a little Francesca known as Frankie- love it.
I think they are all really nice actually. Gretchen maybe a little harder sounding than the others.
Lurve Helena - very romantic.

Bubbaluv · 12/01/2009 20:06

Portia has car problems too - such a shame.

MinkyBorage · 12/01/2009 20:07

portia is really really dreadful
