Has anyone gone into labour while ill with virus/flu?

I am 39 weeks and for the psat 48 hours I have had a terrible virus - high fever, shivers, terrible cough etc etc etc.

I have also been having lots of bloody show and on Monday the OB said I was already 2 cm dilated.

I am terrified of going into labour as I feel so weak. I honestly cannot imagine how I will manage. Will I have to have a c-section?

Has anyone gone into labout while ill? Did adrenalin kick-in and help you cope? Or was it as bad as I am imagining?

One of my friends did this last night at 33 weeks. she is extremely tired but the adrenaline did kick in.

Hope this helps and you are feeling better soon.

Thanks LoveMy. I hope your friend and her baby are doing OK.

Any other experiences? I am obsessing about every little twinge as I am so scared of labouring in this state.

I had a shocking cold and sore throat when I went into labour with dd2. Actually I was induced, cos my waters had gone. I spend the early part of the day sucking strepsils and croaking and sniffling, but once proper labour kicked in, the symptoms just evaporated. Honestly, it'll be fine. Your body can and will suppress virus symptoms if it has something more important to do.

Good luck!

I had a nasty chest infection when in labour with dd. At the start I felt rough but after a few hours I forgot all about it.

I was coughing a bit but you don't really pay any attention to it. You'll have far too much on your mind!

Actually, midwife joked all the coughing was helping to force baby down more!

Good Luck!

I had shocking cold and laryngitus (sp?) and I could hardly talk above a whisper when I went into labour with DS2, and like frogs the symptoms just cleared up when the baby took over control! The midwife just kept having to hand me tissues to blow my nose on a regular basis!!!

Just you put your feet up and drink plenty of liquids, good luck.

I spent a whole day with sickeness and diarrhea then went into labour that night. I remember phoning my mum and saying that I would need her to travel down and stay with me if it continued as I was struggling to look after DS. When I went into labour adreneline kicked in and I was fine. Labour only lasted 1 and a half hours, homebirth - really lovely. Not so easy for poor DH who was also suffering and had to sit helplessly on the sofa
Midwife said it was probably the virus that kickstarted things. Hope you are okay x

I had a horrid cough when having ds, unfortunately it was an elcs, major abdominal surgery and a bad cough are a bad combination lol.

I am 39 weeks too and struggling with a chest infection and cold - went to see GP yesterday who gave me antibiotics so it will hopefully clear up before anything happens. Been having lots of contractions, which are agony if I start coughing during them.

Good luck and hope you feel better soon - good to hear the stories that your body takes over and gets on with the birth.

artichokes · 03/12/2008 15:51

Sorry to hear you are suffering too Craving. At least we can be comforted by these stories of wise bodies taking over.

My fear is I have pretty low stamina anywy. If I am ill I can picture myself begging for all sorts of interventions very early on. Not what I wanted at all.

If it helps at all, I was 2cm dilated for at least 3 weeks before I went into labour with DD.

Hope you feel better soon

I am 30 weeks and have a terrible cold with lots of coughing. I'm also on ferrous sulphate which is causing me some pretty extreme nausea. I am going to see the dr tomorrow if I can get an appointment as I keep getting terrible stomach pains, and as this is my second baby I don't want to end up in premature labour!
