Long first labour? How long was your second?

DS took 47.5 hours from waters breaking to delivery, including about 2 hours pushing... my obstetrician has told me that 'typically' second labours are about half as long, with about 20 mins for the pushing stage.
So should I be settling in for a 24 hour effort for number two? I was hoping it would be a little quicker than that! If you had a long first labour, how long was the second?

Have hope, my first labour with DD(7) was 44 hours so you have my sympathies (should have been a emergency c-section but they missed the signs - but thats another story). On the other hand, the second with DS(3) took 82 minutes!!! I just wish he now showed the same willingness to get things done so quickly .
Good luck!

First was around 36 hours, second was around 7.

from first contraction to being out DS1 36 hours, DS24 hours
from 5cm to birth DS1 6 hours DS2 1 hour.

I feel that DS1 would have been quicker if I had been more active, I did the whole save my strength thing and tried to rest where as when the midwives changed on the Sunday she got me marching round and going up and down stairs.. that got things moving.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 25/11/2008 10:05

37 hours the first time.

5 1/2 the second.

solo · 25/11/2008 10:07

With my Ds my first contractions started at 6.30pm and he was born at 10.50 the following morning.
Dd...the first contractions woke me up at 6.30am and she was born at 5.15pm the same day, so definitely shorter.

milfAKAmonkeymonkeymoomoo · 25/11/2008 10:08

28hrs with DD then 2.5hrs with DS , pushing stage was 50mins with DD and 5 mins with DS!

sunnygirl1412 · 25/11/2008 10:11

Thirty seven and three-quarter hours for the first labour, twenty-four for the second and just over twenty for the third - sorry.

Mind you - the second stage did shorten dramatically - from an hour and a half first time to a minute and a half second time and two contractions third time!

Helsbels4 · 25/11/2008 10:22

From the first contraction to giving birth to ds was 24 hours/ventouse delivery. I had absolutely no desire to push, hence the intervention. Had been havin bh with dd for a few days but from proper contractions to giving birth was 20 hours but I stayed at home for most of it (ds was off school as he was poorly), only had gas and air and it was a completely different experience. Wasn't pushing for very long at all with dd and I was standing against the bed as opposed to lying down with all sorts of monitors and gubbins. Although both labours were fairly long, the second was a much easier birth. Good luck!

twocutedarlings · 25/11/2008 13:34

heather1980 · 25/11/2008 14:09

mummy2t · 25/11/2008 14:58

Posey · 25/11/2008 15:01

25 for first (which I thought was very long until I saw you 40+hours folk!).
2nd was less than half as long, about 11 hours, but I was induced.

pinkmagic1 · 25/11/2008 15:05

50 hours with first and 5 1/2 hours from very first contraction to delivery with my 2nd.

mycatis · 25/11/2008 16:40

oh this has made me feel better!! I was about 48 hours with my son, had emergency section in the end (thank God!)
we are planning on having a baby next year when we get married and I have been very scared about going through that again.

sparklefrog · 30/12/2008 22:17

36 and half hours of labour with DC1, pethidine, gas and air, stitches.

48 minutes with DC2, only 4 puffs of G&A as head crowned.

Wisknit · 02/01/2009 15:12

ds1 28 hours
ds never really got started. contrtactions 20 mins apart and not painful, MW came out to me and said 'oh, you're fully dilated' .
from 1st niggles to delivery about 5 hours

idontlikesundays · 02/01/2009 15:22

54 hours first labour, 8 hours for the next two.

systemsaddict · 02/01/2009 15:42

31h first time, 4h second time. I didn't believe all the dr.s and midwives who said it would be easier but they were so right!
