This may seem like a bit of a dumb question...

However,

There seems to be alot of negative vibes about these examinations on this thread, I have got a few months before im due yet but am getting worried now!!!

What exactly is involved here? What aare they checking for and is it 100 percent necesarry?

Only ever had one smear, it was ok, no pain just totally mortifying!!!

I have 2 lovely midwives looking after me at the moment so I think i will discuss it with them to and see what they say.

i didn't have any internals with first baby, midwife seemed very tuned in to how my labour was progressing,

second baby due imminently and i hope to not have any this time. i have put in birth plan no internals please, but will request one if i feel the need... i could imagine if it is a very lengthy process, i might want an internal to check that something is happening somewhere....
