why 'curry'?

what is ti about spicy curry that's supposed to bring on labour? Is it just an old wives tale or is it because it's supposed to give you upset tummy and so you'll have a big trip to the toilet?

From my midwifery days I gather it has to be a hot one to send you to the loo lots. Nothing like a bit of bowel irritation for stirring things up.

So what do you think Indian women do... curry strike???? .... old wives tales I say but the reasoning is a hot curry gives you the runs and they are a sign of labour....

I tried it all. sex. curry. rasberry leaf tea. pineapple. walking, running jumping. Oh yes, nipple stimulation.

None of it worked.

Uwila - from what I know of your situation... your body was protecting your baby from labour... would you not agree?

I'd just literally finished a massive hot chilli, when splosh, my waters broke!

Ah, yes pupuce I would agree. As did the consultant the day after the caesarean. I aske her if I never went into labour because DD was literally suspended (tied up in the cord. And therefore her head and her body weight never rested on the cervix. It is believe (though not really known for sure) that the weight of the baby resting on the cervix is one factor that helps to sel labour off. The consultant said this was quite possible.

So, yes Pupuce, I agree. As you know I have great faith in caesareans, but in retrospect, I'm not sure if induction was such a great idea.

I'm another curry fan. On the evening of my due date with DS, I craved a hot curry--nothing else would do. 3hrs later, my waters broke! OK, he got stuck and I eventually needed an emergency c/s but I'm sure the curry started things off...

Uwila- no one was suppose to know that the induction in your case was so potentially dangerous !

We've been trying the sex but that hasn't helped yet (although might be why I'm sleeping quite well at the moment) but now I have a runny nose and sore throat etc I'm not sure I'm up for it tonight.

Okay, I need to chill out don't I? This baby will come when it's good and ready and not before and no amount of sex/curry/nipple tweaking is probably going to make it any quicker. Might chocolate have any effect do you think? I have a huge bar of fruit and nut in the fridge!!!!

I started labour whilst having a chinese takeaway. Didn't believe I was in labour but dh thought we should go to the hospital to be sure. Anyway had dd that evening 2 weeks early!!

Curry worked for me - 1 hour after eating one I spent 20 mins on the loo (sorry if tmi!) and 5.5 hrs later dd was born!

Definitely worked for me too. Went for a Thai meal and combined spicy curry with fresh pineapple for desert. Went home, went to bed and waters broke an hour later. DD2 born the following morning. (It was definitely the 'bowel effect' in my case... will spare you all the details .)

McKenzie - the nipple thing is only supposed to work (so I was told anyway) if you do it for AGES (like 20 mins of tweaking in every hour and just keep on and on doing it... BOOOOORING. I'd rather have a nice curry!)

I had the most amazing chocolate flavoured with hot chilli once. Maybe you should eat that whilst someone tweaks your nips--bound to do the trick...

Chilli choc was from some posh choc shop in Chelsea. As for nip tweaks, I suppose clothes pegs would do it if you couldn't find a willing DP...

I was due sunday 27th so now overdue. And this is baby no2 which everyone tells me usually come early. I've had the birthing pool set up at home now for 3 weeks - They'll be wanting it back soon!!

Eek! I can see why you're eager to get things started. Were you overdue with DB1?

DS was ten days late - due on 24th March, born on 3rd April - curry then sex worked for us Also I was due to be induced on 5th April, so think that helped to hurry things along!

3 days early with first one. Another reason why I wasn't expecting this one to be late I guess.

Has anything started yet? Lust plug? Baby engaged?

A friend of mine swears by acupunture. Personally, I think none of it works... ut I definitely enjoy the excuse to eat loads of spicy curry.... mmmmmmmmmmm... good!
