Elective C/S - pay for section and 'tidy up' of excess skin/stretch marks?

This is just a question, so don't all jump on me in horror for asking but a friend mentioned to me that it can be possible (if you are having your DEFINITELY LAST child) to pay your consultant to do an elective C/Section and whilst he's at it he will take away all your loose flappy left over skin, stretch marks etc (basically a mini-tummy tuck) at the same time. I've had two normal deliveries in the past and am pg with my LAST child. Quite fancy the idea of this.........what do you ladies think? Is this possible and if so where do I go to get it done?

By the way I am aware of the risks of a C/Section and for the record had a hideous labour with my last child which VERY NEARLY ended up with a crash Section.

I must admit to me - who had a crash c-section - I would worry more about having a healthy baby and being as mobile as possible afterwards. The tidying up bits can be done later if that's important.

i have heard of this quite commonly in Latin America.

not sure about here.

i don't think it would be very common in the UK, but perhaps in Europe.

I fully support you on your quest for an elective. Ask for a private consultation with one of the consultants at you local NHS hospital (try to find out from friends/midwife if there is a consultant who is more pro CS). I think it costs about £60 but dont quote me. I know they will sterilise at the same time dont know about plastic surgery. If not go fully ptivate - do you live near London?

How on earth can you get rid of stretchmarks with a 'quick tidy up'?

I have heard of women having tummy tucks after a c-section, but have always wondered if it's true? A tummy tuck is a big op - the scra is usually much bigger than the bikini line cut of a section. i would wonder if it were possible?

Sounds fab in la-la land but in RL - nah!

There is no "whilst he is at it" your c/s will not be performed by a plastic surgeon - well at least you may pray that it is not or you may not see the light of day after the procedure.

If you want a tummy tuck you should wait until you have healed, that there are no complications and you are fit and bonded with your baby with no PND. You do not want to go under the knife for abdominal plastic surgery son after a C/S - please it is common sense just think about it for a moment.

Also -there is bugger all you can do about stretch marks - ask any top surgeon (I have worked in this field for many years) ask yourself why you will never se posh spices' bare tummy.

like i said, i'd see this going over like a lead brick in the UK.

in Europe or the US or Latin America, yes, they'll sterilise and tidy up during electives.

they sterilise by cutting, however, during Csection. or by removing the Fallopian tubes entirely.

oh, well, there's no private maternity care in Scotland at all, as far as I know.

Apparently they do this in Northern Ireland? The person who mentioned this said she knows a couple of people who've had this done privately in N Ireland? You just have to pay for it apparently?.........

oh, you're definitely going to have to pay for it.

it's likely you won't be given an elective csection at all in Scotland if you don't have a medical need for it.

Yep that's true it is hard to find private maternity care outside of London.

At the hospital I go to if it's your third section they cut the old scarring away, which they jokingly call a tummy tuck. I'm sure it's to make it easier for themselves more than for the mother.

I had an elective cs without medical need but I dont live in Scotland. Still, have an ask around and find out about a private consultation with one of the consultants, its probably ulikely they will do the plastic surgery bit tho'.

Maybe I'll get slated for this, but I don't care, it's what I think anyway - Having a baby, or babies, changes your figure, it's supposed to look different after having children! I'm also not saying it because I am one of the lucky ones, because I certainly am not. I am covered in stretch marks and after having 2 chidren have a definate wobbly belly - i really dont care - I have 2 beautiful healthy children and to me that is what life is all about.

i'm not aware of any cosmetic procedure that will get rid of the stretch marks - perhaps some laser treatments which couldn't be done at the same time as csection, to fade them some - but a limited tummy tuck is possible (don't think they can do a full one at the time because of how your tissues stretch during pregnancy).

Of course the tuck part would not be carried out by an obstetrician but he would co-ordinate with an abdominoplasty specialist and they would share the operating theatre, the incision and the anasthaesia etc. It isn't uncommon and it's worth making enquiries if you are adamant it's something you want to do.

I'm not adamant about it at all. Just wondering. In fact I had assumed I'd just have another vaginal delivery like the last 2. It was just this friend of mine that put the idea into my head and it's just been ticking away at the back of my mind. Also saw a friend today who had an elective C/S last wk for breech baby (her 3rd baby, 1st C/S). She was really gutted to have to have a section having had easy normal deliveries with DC's but 1 week later she looks and feels absolutely great post section and said it was fine. So that made me think about it again. (Not that she's had any mummytucking or anything done obviously!).

my mother had it in the US, FWIW, frazzle.

and among her Latin American friends it's definitely not unheard of or looked down upon.
