Has anybody given birth at Wishaw General Hospital(Scotland) Please help only 3 weeks till I'm due.

I was just wondering if any one has given birth at Wishaw General Hospital( Scotland) and what were your experiences and would you reccomend it?. The main reason I want to give birth there is they have 2 pools so there is a good chance of getting the water birth I hope for. I have had some not too good experiences when I was admitted when I was 12 weeks pregnant with hyperemesis gravidarum, I was throwing up so much I had just fainted so I buzzed for a Midwife who came and told me to " pull myself together" as she had to get milk to feed a baby. Come to think of it I should of complained but I was just so happy to get out. Alot of other people have mixed feelings about the care they recieved, some good, and some quite awful.

Can anyone give me some help please?.

Hi Louise, I gave birth at Wishaw Gen with my DD 3.5 years ago and 2nd baby due on Hogmanay. To be honest, I found them pretty good, they let me labour on my own and were helpful when I buzzed for them - I got to labour in the pool for a while (but that wasn't for me). Eventually my lovely midwife suggested I have an epidural (gas and air was making me violently sick) and was transferred to High Dependency Labour ward for further monitoring. This believe it or not, was great. The one midwife stayed with me constantly during my labour (during the night), they got a comfy chair and blanket for DH to let him have a sleep and let me rest. Eventually had a forceps delivery by a lovely (young) lady consultant. Afterwards, the care was v.good although wasn't given a huge amount of support with b.feeding. Got the impression from what was going on around that they were rushed off their feet, but other than BF there was always someone to help.
I wouldn't worry about it if I was you. Lots of my friends have had their babies at WG and I've not heard any horror stories yet

I have nt given birth there but i have never heard any horror stories either (im a doula and hear these often)

Im disappointed to hear about the breastfeeding support you didnt receive heathersmummy as i was lead to beleive they felt very strongly about this there and even run the lanarkshire community mothers group which offer training to become peer supporters.

i had both my boys there as well as major gyn surgery when pregnant with ds1 and i cannot fault them. the staff are fantastic and during both birth i had the same MW all day so the continuity was fab.

I had DS1 in ward 24 and DS2 in ward 23 and both had brilliant staff. my only comment would be that once you have had your LO and you are both ok you can go for ages before you see anyone as they are short staffed (like most of the NHS) and the women in labour take priority.

am sure you will find it just as good.

Had ds there May 07, and whilst its the only time I have given birth I have to say I found them great.

Had a bad experience whilst MC'ing but that was one very senior consultant who should have known better.

The care I received whilst labouring... all 14 hours of it was great, no problems at all, didnt use the birthing pool - was in FAR too much pain to move, got an epidural when I asked for one, baby got a wee bit distressed, plenty of monitoring, ended up with a c/s which was fine by me, after 14 hours I was knackered!!

The after care was a little...hmm.... lacking? As a first time mum it would have been nice to have been shown to change a meconium nappy, but I think that was more down to them being understaffed etc.

One word of warning - the food is dire especially "breakfast" which was a scabby trolley at the end of the corridor with a flask of coffee/tea, and a box of cornflakes - make sure your bring your own or get dp to stop at Maccy's on the way in.

My consultant was Mr McMurray? He was fab, even though he is as liverpool supporter, as is dp so they spent more time discussing Liverpools chances in the final as opposed to my impending birth.

a good friend had 3 babies there in the last 7 years. and she is not the type to go back if it was dire. i will ask her at the weekend and report back

Had ds2 at Wishaw.

Was admitted at 20 wks with suspected appendicitus and had a horrible time, so like you was dreading giving birth there.

As it turns out the care during labour was fine. Can't comment on the after care as got discharged 4 hours after ds2 was born.

(dh was also very happy as he got to watch footie all the way through my labour )

geordieminx - i had forgotten about the food (and DH has just reminded me how expensive the shop was)!

also take a bottle for water. there is a water cooler in the day room you can top you water bottles up

Hi geordieminx, sorry just catching up on threads had a hectic couple of days . Wasn't me at Strathclyde Park, more likely to catch Heather and I eyeing up the dinosaur at Kelvingrove . For a girl she's dinosaur mad!

I too had forgotten just how terrible the food was, was grateful to get out just to get a proper meal! I take it things will be no different when I'm having DC2 at the end of the year.

I had DS there and have nothing but praise for them. They were fantastic with me and I even had a nursery nurse help me breastfeed all through the night.
If you need help you do need to ask for it though, they tend to leave you alone unless you ask for help.
And I'm fussy but liked the food. Didn't they have rolls also for breakfast? I had a roll and jam every morning, yummy!
