What were you doing when you went into labour?

I'm currently 38 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child and am curious to know what others were doing when they realised they were in labour and what time they gave birth. With my 1st I had a planned induction at 37 weeks as my waters started leaking a few days earlier but I hadn't had any real contractions so I was in hospital when I went into labour and ds was born at 4.20am. With my second, again my waters started leaking early at 37.5 weeks and was told I would have to be induced if labour didn't start naturally within a couple of days. However, I decided to take some castor oil (as I was going to be induced anyway) and my waters broke properly after an afternoon nap at 3.30pm. So I was in bed when it all started and dd was born at 12.30am. This time round I have managed to get past 38 weeks without leaking but I'm starting to wonder when things will kick off and what am I likely to be doing when it does! I would be very interested to hear others experiences and to know whether babies are more likely to be born during the night than during the day or if this is just my own experience.

DD1 - listening to a new CD that DH had bought.
DD2 - unblocking U bend of kitchen sink.
DS - woken by DD2 complaining of nightmare and felt enormous contraction! He was born 90 mins later so the shock obviously worked.

Out in Brixton Mkt when waters started leaking, out for dinner when contractions started.

I just got out of bed and noticed my waters had broken. Finished hanging out my washing before making any phonecalls!

Well I knew I was going to go into labour that night becasue I started it off by downing a bottle of castor oil!

So had a nice day out, came home get all organised, downed the bottle and then st down with DP and put on a DVD. By the time the film was over I was having mild contractions and 6 hours later there she was. My waters never broke, she came out in / with them.

First time, just woke up and realised things had started.
Second time, I honestly can't remember.
Last time, making the tea.

Woudl you believe, waiting for the removal van to arrive as we were moving house that day. DH had just left to go to the new house with a carload of stuff and I was at home. Left the old house in labour, never to return and left hospital with new baby to new house. I think DH was more exhausted than I was!!

SoupDragon · 09/02/2005 21:17

Sleeping.

I was having a cup of tea and sitting in front of a fan like a beeched whale - I'd swelled horribly and it was the hottest summer on record (2003). The day before, I'd had some contractions around 4PM, but they'd knocked off around 7. Sure enough, right around 4, they started again. By 9, however, they were very much still there! My water never broke. It was broken by the midwives at 8cm and I went to 10 about half an hour later. She was born at 4.05 the next afternoon at 38 weeks, 3 days.

I was in bed around 10am my water broken...
(I was at the hospital around 4am...for bleeding reason)Dh didn't believe this time...after first false alarm....But he took me at the hospital and I was 6cm...
Ds born at 7pm in the evening...
Great experience I've got to say!
A bit of pain at the end...

misdee · 09/02/2005 21:33

sleeping and sleeping.

waters broke in bed with dd1, woke up in full blown labour with dd2.

Donbean · 09/02/2005 21:34

OOh yes expat i had ds in the summer of 2003. I was in front of a fan cruching ice cubes!

Moomina · 09/02/2005 21:35

Watching tv, after having just eaten an enormous bowl of spag bol. So when the first contractions came, I was convinced it was indigestion and it didn't occur to me that I could be having the baby - completely ridiculous considering I was 10 days overdue at that point...

winnie · 09/02/2005 21:56

Sleeping. I woke up well into labour with both babies.

expatinscotland · 09/02/2005 21:58

I should have eaten a major meal before I went to hospital. I regretted that most of all. That wee bacon roll didn't last and then they wouldn't let me eat. Ugggh - 24 hours w/no food.

Kayleigh · 09/02/2005 22:00

Asleep here too. I went into labour with ds1 and ds2 at around 1:30 am on a Monday morning.

blueteddy · 09/02/2005 22:04

pixiefish · 09/02/2005 22:04

I was waiting for dh to come home from my dad's as he was sorting my dad's pc out. waters broke and was having contractions about 8.30 pm. dd was born the next afternoon at 4.06pm

With dd1, in the local Chinese restaurant tucking into crispy duck which I insisted on finishing as it was expensive and lovely, much to the consternation of the waiters! I was clutching onto the tablecloth as the contractions came and nearly had the whole table over at one point.
