If I have another baby i've been told i'll have to have a c-section and its not the op that scares me its the stay in hospital after.

Any chance I could get out earlier than 3 days? Like 24 hours later?

You can discharge yourself but they will tell you it is at your own risk. I have had 2 sections and you will need pretty much full time care at home along with a lot of drugs while you are not able to walk/wee/poo for a day or two. I don't like being in hospital but post section, it was the best place all things considered.

I was out in one week but my friend was out in 48 hours. I think it depends on the the individual.

Lucky, I have same dilema at the moment.

Have been told that I can go after 48 hours. But remember its not a prison, they can't keep you against your will.

BTW I transferred from hospital to a midwifery led unit after 24 hours with first section. was told it was against rules by hospital but mw's were happy to have me and it was lovely!

It was four days for me (would have been three, had DD not been jaundiced).

Does your hospital have any private rooms? I was in one for my c-section, and it was a real plus (own loo, for starters!!) It cost something like £40 per night, which I thought was well worth it. The midwives left me to my own devices as a result of my not being on the ward, but I was perfectly happy with that as it was my second baby and I felt more confident!

Depends on your hospital. I stayed in 2 nights after emergency CS, friend of mine had planned CS with twins in same hospital and they let her out the same day [gasp]

I had to have emergency c-section and the first 24 hours was horrific.

It was like 90 degrees and i'd been left in the gown i'd had the op in, with a tiny pad to mop up spillages and my baby put well out of reach but not enough MW's to help me get her when she was crying.

I felt disguisting and cried myself to sleep the first night (although that could have been the tiredness granted)

I have had 2 (one emergency, one planned). The planned one was lovely. As it was my second baby, the mws left me to it a bit more and we just co-slept and fed. It was lovely.

My top tip for hospital is take ear plugs!!!

first thing you may not need another c/s i didn't. second thing they may possibly let you out day 4 if you are doing well and because its your second c/s, third thing is sometimes our bodies let us down and you might not recover just as quick just because you have had one before, so best place really is at the hospital

well they can't keep you there so long as your baby and you are ok and you have got rid of all the cannula and catheter gubbins.

i was ready and desperate to go 36hours post cs and they made me stay overnight. really wish i'd just gone because there was no reason to stay and they did nothing with bf at all, i had to get out of there to get help.

Probably not 24 hours! In my experience, dd was born 9.30 on Thursday. You have a catheter and morphine. I was pretty much off with the fairies for 24 hours. It is difficult to sit up/move about at first and you are given strong painkillers. Friday morning I got out of bed with catheter still attached and went in search of tea and toast as no bugger was going to bring me any. Got someone to remove catheter and had a shower ( absolute bliss as i was minging) before first lot of visitors arrived. Saturday I was up and about and if I'd have thought about it probably would have asked to go home, but busy sorting out feeding and being fussed over by family and friends. Sunday morning I was fed up and asked. As I was fine and dd was fine was allowed. I must admit it made a difference that we paid to have a private room. I had been on antenatal ward for 2 weeks previously and when I knew I would be induced requested this. Worth every penny!

Yup. You can do it at private BUPA-type hospitals or at home with independent midwives.

hmmm - well its a long way down the line as the 6 month old horror is making me not want any at the moment (i'm sure its just her age) so we'll see. lol

I had an emergency CS under GA at 4pm on Saturday and went home 9pm on Sunday!
I did have to discharge myself, but the midwives let me go as I was walking, and on paracetamol. However, I think it was more likely that they were fed up of DS screaming all night!

You can go to a private hospital - there are lots of threads on MN re: advantages/disadvantages of going private. I would imagine you are even less likely to be able to have an early discharge from a private hosp than from an NHS one, though.

2 nights is a standard stay after c-section. Of course they cannot keep you there against your will but imo it's not wise to leave earlier than you need to. It's a big op, as you know. Most NHS hospitals are so strapped for beds they won't keep you any longer than they have to anyway

Is it absolutely definite that you would need a section?

You can go private, but be prepared to pay up to £10k for it. Another option is to pay for a private room in your hospital, but these aren't guaranteed and tend to be given on a first-come, first-served basis. Usually to caesarean or twin mothers, etc. so it all depends on whether you get lucky or not. They tend to be a lot cheaper - around £150 for the night, although that varies from hospital to hospital. Also, some hospitals have side rooms that they allocate for free, but again there is no guarantee of this.

They can't keep you in against your will. As long as your baby is well then you can technically discharge yourself, although they don't advise it. Ideally, they like you to stay in for three days post-section, which also gives you time to rest and recover and not overdo things. This would be the ideal and I'd recommend it, but equally I think some post natal care can be so hit and miss that I can totally understand a new mother feeling that she'd be better off home.

I've been told i'd have to because of the way DD presented her head. One MW's told me it was to do with my pelvis shape? (never looked into it any further though)

I'd love to get my HB which was meant to happen with DD but apparently it's not to be.

lucky why do you think another cs is needed? why did you have the first one?

mine was (with hindsight) avoidable i think, although i never went into labour properly so perhaps there was something else going on. if i ever get pg again will have homebirth unless it is properly impossible.

I was out in under 48 hours for my second-baby born midday monday,I went home mid morning on the wednesday.I was keen to get home as I have an older daughter who was two at the time and very upset about me being in hospital.it was fine but you will need help at home as you do need to be gentle with yourself and careful.Good luck!

She was a planned HB - we did all the dilating and the pushing but then because she was presenting wrong she couldn't be delivered (no matter how hard I pushed) then her heartbeat started to drop so we blue lighted to hospital.

Hmmm, well, obviously I couldn't say for sure but I'd be inclined to look into that further before assuming you would need another section. Babies present in lots of strange ways for lots of different reasons!

A private room might be worthwhile. Be aware though that some units will want you in a bay for the first night post-section as it is easier to keep an eye on your condition that way.

36 hours post section I was discharged after my first (and only!) emergency c-section - it can be done! I was NHS btw.
