How long can u expect to spend in hospital 2nd time round

If you have a normal birth(not ceserean), how long do you normally spend in hosital if it's your 2nd and all is well with you and baby?
I will happily have an epidural if i can, so this may add on extra time i've heard.

I was determined to stay for as long as possible (DD1 was only 15 mo), but they kicked me out after 12 hours

To be fair it was all simple with no complications and I felt fine to go, but had been looking forward to a couple of nights just me and DD2.

I think it depends on the policy of your hospital - four hours is the norm around here, assuming no complications. But, like you say, perhaps a bit extra if you've had an epidural.

I would ask your midwife

I think it mainly depends on what time you gave birth, and if there is a doctor around to sign you off. If you're lucky it can be as little as a couple of hours, if not, then you might even stay over night.

T'is my biggest bug bear, with both of mine I've had to stay over night, and by the time they get round to signing you out, I am climbing the bloody walls! My sister on the other hand, went in Sunday lunch time, and was home by sunday tea time!

usually 6 hours if all is normal

but if you have an epi, it might be longer and your birth might be slightly more medicalised, and you might be in longer

i was ready to go 6 hours after DD, but could not find anyone to discharge me, i had her at 01.15, and did not get discharged until 4pm the next day.

I had to stay in another five effing days with dd2 - my disappointment was overwhelming. No epidural - just pre-eclampsia. Had epi with dd1 - think it was 24 hrs.

I'm aiming for not much more than 6 hours, but that will be the minimum for me as they'll have to test ds's blood sugar twice 3 hours apart, due to gestational diabetes. I suspect I'm being a bit optimistic .

after an epidural, 6hrs ive been told.

I had dd1 at 2.45am, and was asking to go home straight away (first child!) they said i had to stay at least 6hrs, ended up being in 12hrs, but that was fine!

DD2, no epidural, but Group B Strep, so wanted to keep me in 24hrs - discharged myself after 16hrs

DS, no epidural, nightmare labour, meconium in waters so kept in for 24hrs. Had DS at 11.14am on the thursday, came home the friday lunchtime.

I had to stay in 2 nights with ds, the 1st wasn't too bad, but the 2nd....lets just say i don't think i had more than 20mins sleep at a time with sharing a small room with 4 other mum's and babies.

Really hope to come home asap, then at least dh can help whilst i sleep

satyed in about 28 hours after my first baby....

it was 6 hours for me with my second dc, but i had my baby in the morning, and then managed to catch the doc on his afternoon round to sign me fit and well...

the midwives like to see that your baby has had a good feed too, so usually one feed straight after birth and then another before you go home....and aslo that you are happy and feeling ok etc....

if you have an epidural, i'm not sure if you need to stay in a fair bit longer until it has worn off and you have full feeling back etc...

had my third dc at home....fantastic!!!

It's usually 6 hours with no complications (don't know about epidural), but as others have said, it depends on the time of day. I had DD2 at 8.15am, and was discharged at 5.00pm because it was that time before a paediatrician could come to do her discharge. If I hadn't had her in the morning, I think we'd have been in overnight which I really didn't want. I think if you are keen to go, you need to keep reminding them about it - every time a midwife came near to ask anything, I kept saying "we're going today / as soon as possible" etc! If there is a home from home unit you can be discharged from it after 6 hours without going anywhere near the ward.

One week with ds1 (born with chickenpox)

24 hours with ds2. No complications, no epidural.

was in for three days due to ds blood sugar and body temp too low and could not stabilise it.
hoping that this one will be jsut a few hours if the same probs do not arise again!

I had DS2 at 8pm and was discharged at 10.30pm. Lovely. Was lucky that paediatrician was about and wanted to get us out of the way. Think it has to be a certain amount of time post epidural - have to wait for legs to 'come back', pee etc...

dd1 - c-section a week
ds1 - vbac i had to stay five days, but they were happy to discharge him within hours...
dd2 - 2nd vbac i stayed about ten days i think, she stayed 5 weeks.

i'm not having any more lol.

I was desperate to go home asap! Had a nap and a wash and a feed (I think) it was a bit of a blur then we had to wait around for rhesus blood test or something. Eventually DH got them to say they would send a MW with the rhesus injection tomorrow so managed to go home early afternoon with Ds born 4am-ish (I think).
Then DH charged off out of the maternity unit like a bullet from a gun with me trying to keep up and weakly saying 'wait for me' wasn't quite as easy as I'd thought.
Then got home and panicked a lot about whether we were doing right things with Ds...
