Third Child Labour - how was it for you?

I have heard that often your 3rd labour is more difficult than the first. I am planning a home birth for DC3 and wondering if there is any truth in this?

not for me, though i was much more 'efficent' at labour, my contractions were massive.

I had my first HB with db3 and it took about 4 hours from niggle to baby.

Marathon · 01/07/2008 22:04

Third was quicker and easier than first, was as 'easy' but not as quick as second!

sweetkitty · 01/07/2008 22:06

Erm can we only have nice stories of pinfree 10 minute third labours please, I'm 38+5 and trying to work out if my waters have gone at present (don't think they have)

sweetkitty · 01/07/2008 22:06

painfree not pinfree

ravenAK · 01/07/2008 22:12

Expected it to be like shelling peas - in fact, waters went, contractions started then stopped. Threw hissy fit tantrum - had previous crap experiences of labour at same hospital - got agreement to induce & whack an epidural in.

Took max dose of everything to shift dd2 - labour finally v quick & easy just before they decided to transfer me to theatre for CS.

Definitely not as bad as 1st (long labour, hours screaming for epidural, ventouse) but several MWs did say to me that 3rd births are 'notoriously' slow...

TheOriginalXENA · 01/07/2008 22:17

My third was the easiest

castille · 01/07/2008 22:22

My 3rd was induced but once the drugs kicked in it was my best and quickest labour (less than an hour), I felt totally in control throughout

DanJARMouse · 01/07/2008 22:23

Blardy horrific

1st was induced, epidural, all fairly textbook and easy

2nd was normal labour and birth and my best ever

3rd well, if i could rewind i would never have gotten pregnant! It was HELL ON EARTH. So much so that plans for number 4 are well and truly out the blardy window!

twofishes · 01/07/2008 22:29

Ist was a shock
2nd was fine ( at home still washing up at 10cm dilated!)
3rd..loooong..but he was huge
still tempted by a fourth though!!

Loshad · 01/07/2008 22:30

3rd - piece of cake, easiest of the lot. wood fire burning in grate, Dh and midwife drinking tea, midwife remarks to Dh "she's pushing"
(Loshad felt like saying "of course i'm f*ing pushing i'm in labour" but couldn't be bothered)
The push midwife had noticed was the first and last - ds3 shot out like a pea and she just grabbed him before he hit his head on the floor.

BigBadMousey · 01/07/2008 22:45

not more difficult just different.

I was told 3rd labours were notoriously stop / start and my god the were right. I was up for night after night with proper contractions only for it all to tail off again by 5am .

We he did decide to make an appearance it was quicker than the other two but other than that, no different.

I would have a fourth if it weren't for the fact that dealing with DD1 atm is far more painful than all my labours put together and magnified 10 fold

sweetkitty · 01/07/2008 22:48

thanks JARM

so far I have had
DD1 4h 20m G&A
DD2 2h 30m G&A at home

surely

DD3 15 mins G&A ???

rainbowdays · 01/07/2008 23:03

Third definitely the quickest, easiest and best even though he was the biggest of the three!

Ds1 - long hard back labour, epidural and vontuse, tore, 7lbs 12 oz.

dd - 2.5 hours, g&a fast and furious, tore, 7lbs 3oz

ds2 - 1.5 hours at home, no pain relief available but went well and fantastic to have a homebirth, no tearing despite being 9lbs!

Just wanted to encourage you that 3rd ones are not always horible, and can be ok!

GreenGodess · 02/07/2008 19:24

Feeling more positive now especially re homebirth

better of the first 3 (4th best overall) in terms of speed, slightly more painful than ds2's 44 hr marathon but that was simply because 4 hrs was 'short and sharp'

absolutely fine agter, was {gggrrrr] as paediatrician busy so couldnt get discharged to get to a baptism at mid day lol

you'll be fine

dinny · 02/07/2008 19:34

newly pg with 3rd and this is interesting reading! cannot believe got to do it all again! when are you due, GG?

GreenGodess · 03/07/2008 17:23

Due July 27th hoping for weekend before though as children break up from school/ playgroup on the 23rd!!! Just a few days to get on my feet would be nice!

My third labour was by far the best of the 3. Contractions felt different as ds3 was posterior but only got out of bed at midnight as contractions were getting strong (although were 15 mins apart) and he was born at 3.15am after 3 pushes. Almost makes me want a 4th.

Agree that it was a bit stop start though - I had period type cramps and mild contractions on and off for a few days before the proper contractions started.
