So normally she is awake a lot during the day, maybe 1 or 2 half hour naps. Last night she slept through the night for 5/6 hours but all day today she has been sleeping. Has been hard to wake at times but will take a bottle when I give it to her.
have taken her to the GP and they said her obs are fine and she looks okay and that they can just have sleepy days?
she’s having wet nappies about 5 today about (16 hours)
I am really worried, don’t really know what to do and panicking something is wrong.

I’m not sure, but 1 or 2 half hour naps is remarkably little sleep for a 5 week old surely?

I’m not normally one who buys into the nap obsession, but that does strike me as odd. And I agree changes to normal behaviour are always worth thinking about.

I mean yesterday she only had 2 half hour naps. Day before 1 nap of an hour. Maybe she’s just very tired…

Totally normal shes a growing baby. She will probably have you up a few times in the night though!

Merrymoonage · 27/08/2026 18:51

Most babies at 5 weeks are largely waking to eat, look around for a few mins and going back to sleep again.

This sounds normal to me OP. It's the earlier wakeful days that sound unusual! They start sleeping less around 12 weeks IME.

She might just be shifting her routine so you may find she’ll start to sleep more in the day and be awake more at night

AlwayAnxious · 27/08/2026 18:55

So shes normally awake all.day apart from 30-60 minutes? Thats unusual.for a 5 week old baby

Most 5 week olds sleep the majority of the day and night, but wake every 2-3hrs for food/ because they need a nappy change. Has your DC always had so little sleep?

How many feeds has she has in the last 24 hours? Some babies do sleep for 5-6 hours overnight from this age (and some for even longer) but I would then expect them to guzzle food down during the day.
The problem with a sleeping baby who isn’t feeding much is that they can get weaker quite quickly and then don’t have the energy to feed. What have you done to wake her to feed? Have you stripped her down? Have you tickled her feet? Her hands? Stroked her cheeks?
If not, I’d call the hospital where you gave birth and get their advice rather than rely on a GP.
How has she been doing until now? Did she maintain her birth weight/regain it quickly? Has she been gaining weight? What is her feeding like in general?
Before I send you into a complete panic, this could be nothing. It could just be that she has had a couple of “busy” days (whether going out or having visitors or just brain development which won’t be visible) and is just catching up on some overdue sleep.
