Birthing Pool Recommendations for a Home Birth?

After being put off after a really tragic story in the news, I’ve came back around to the prospect of a home birth. The home birth group I was a member of no longer exists so I wondered if anyone had any recommendations for a pool to hire?

I’ve been looking at Home Birth Supplies and I’m really stuck! The MIA VIA and Pool in a Box look good but I’m not sure. I basically just want to lie in the pool like I would in a bath as I laboured in bath last time and just lay there feeling very relaxed until I sadly had to get out.

I had a water birth 26 years ago and I now can’t remember who I hired the pool from. They probably no longer exist anyway!

First time around, I hired a pool and took it in with me to hospital. It was the biggest one I could get, because I wanted to be able to lie in it. It needed assembling rather than just to be blown up.

As it turned out, things moved more quickly than expected and there wasn’t time to assemble the pool, so I had to do without it.

Second time around I went for a home birth and hired a smaller blow-up pool which would be quicker to assemble. I found I didn’t want to lie in the pool at all. What I wanted was to be more upright (much more effective in terms of pain relief). That meant that the depth of the pool was much more important than its diameter.

Mine didn’t have one, but the ones with an inbuilt seat look good.

I’d definitely recommend a water birth. Good luck!

I used Gentle births birthing pool hire earlier this year and they were fab. Really helpful, easy to speak to if you needed to and super flexible. I had the mini pool, which was still pretty big! I didn't actually make it into the pool (DS arrived within 20 mins) but I would definitely recommend Gentle births to hire a pool from 😊

I wouldn’t have a water birth as I don’t want the baby’s first mouthful of fluids to be chlorinated pool water full of nasties.

My pool didn’t have any chlorine in it. We just filled it straight from the tap.

Tap water has chlorine and other chemicals in it

Ok. But a very small amount. It’s not like being born in a public swimming pool!

Yes absolutely, I just wanted to add my 5 cents which is something most people don’t think about!

I used Barefoot Birth Pools and got a regular as well as a TENS machine. It was fine but I could definitely have got a mini!! Not like you’re doing lengths in it…

My top would be to consider not bothering, we hired one then I didn't use it. Had a lovely home birth but didn't fancy the pool on the day so was a lot of faff for no benefit!

They don't take in the water? They don't inhale until they are brought out of the water.

Would you be able to share what county you’re going to birth in? Some have dedicated home birth teams who actually supply a pool for free themselves. And other counties sometimes have a pool rental service which can be cost effective x
