I've got SPD and someone I know had it and they wouldn't let her use the birhting pool.

Why not? It's hard enough to get comfy with SPD.. so why not use the birthing pool to be bale to move round more freely? i really don't want to give birth without the birthing pool so now I'm getting a little worried that they won't let me have it.

What do we all think?

I had it with DD3, and no, I also wasn;t allowed in the pool.

it is because they needed to ensure that my hips didn;t 'give' too much, plus the actual climbing in and out of the pool would have been an impossible task for me!!!

getting in and out of a bath was out of the question, so a pool???....no chance.

They said I couldn't with SPD because they couldn't get me out in a hurry.

However, you can often negotiate to be able to have a bath providing they have a hydraulic lift (most labour wards have one) so they can retrieve you if you get stuck).

It's largely crap about getting you out quickly. What kind of emergency would suddenly appear whilst you were in the pool? As long as you are healthy in every other respect (normal range BMI, no Pre Eclampsia etc).

They can monitor you regularly with a doppler - as they would any other 'client' in a birthing pool.

Exactly what BettySpaghetti said, I was offered it both times, accepted both times, then gave birth while it was still being filled! It's absolute balls that those with SPD can't have a water birth!

Sounds very hopeful. My physio said to use the birthing pool but our labour ward is disasterous and they only even allow one birthing partner so I think they do things to be awkward.

I had SPD with pg #3 and I used at a pool at home. We had steps up to it which I took very carefully so it was fine getting in and out (with help of course). My DP tok the view that in a hurry he could get me out fine.

I found it fab for the pain of SPD as well as labour. It enable me to birth kneeling up (with legs quite close together), which I wouldn't have managed out of water. It also meant a hands off birth, so less intervention that would involve examinations and stirrups etc which would be horrible with SPD.

IIWY, I would just say you intend to use the pool and ask what they will do to facilitate this. Best of luck.

Have just come back from a water birthing info evening at my hospital and they said as long as you can get in and out of the pool you can use it - so it will depend on the severity of your SPD.

I have SPD but think I will grin and bear the pain of getting in the pool cos being in the water will mean I can move easily during labour.
