Possible early/preterm labour

Hi all, think I’m anxious and needed to get everything out there and also hoping that maybe someone has similar experience and/or can offer some words of wisdom or advice maybe. Sorry in advance for a long one!
On New Year’s Eve morning I’d been having painful tightenings every 10 mins, tried everything to ease it/get rid - paracetamol, hot shower, laying down, sitting, walking, change of movement etc. Got to a point where I was getting worried as I’m still early so called in and they sent me straight to Labour suite rather than triage.
They put me on monitor which showed the contractions and checked for dilation (I wasn’t dilating) but they did the Actim Partus test which came back positive for preterm labour in next 14 days so they kept me in . Contractions got as much as 3-4 in 10 mins by the evening and then eventually spaced out to 1 in 10-15. They checked me through out the night again though because of the contractions coming closer together and no change. They kept me in again yesterday as same thing happened, they keep coming closer together for a little while until they space out.
They’ve had the conversation with me about if baby does come early - they wouldn’t give steroids as I’m so close to 35 weeks but antibiotics would need to be given after birth to be on the safe side. Also had someone from the preemie team come to me and talk about feeding at that gestation too so I’m not TOO anxious now about going this early.
Eventually I got them to agree to let me home today with a plan after having a growth scan (baby estimated at bang on 6lb and on 81% centile, my biggest baby yet). The plan is, if I have 2 in 10 for at least an hour then to call up and go straight in, no messing around. I was told to not take the tightenings lightly as they’re long and strong and palpable so they’re no joke. Currently back at home now for a few hours and still at 1 every 10-15 and still painful but feel much more relaxed than when I was in hospital. I feel like it’s basically a waiting game now….is he going to stay put another few weeks or are we getting ready to welcome him into the world way sooner than expected 😭
This is my 4th baby btw (DD1 13, born at 36+5 after 4 days of latent labour and 5lb 7,
DD2 12, born at 38+6 after 12 hours latent, 12 hours established, 6lb 5,
DS1, 11 months, born at 37+2 after 5 days latent labour and less than 5 mins established (went from 3cm to head out in a matter of mins), 5lb 1).
The doctors are nervous that my established labour was so quick last time and only 11 months ago but my latent phase usually gives me enough time to make it in. I also have needed to have waters broken and then hormone drip with every labour as I struggle to move forward but this time there’s no dilation at all which is a good thing as I’m so early but also frustratingly painful and confusing as to making it in to hospital in time.

Any experience, advice, virtual hand holding, anything really - I’d really appreciate it ♥️

Hope little one stays in for a bit longer. How close to 35 weeks are you?

Ch49091 · 03/01/2025 09:10

Thank you 🙏🏽 I’ve made it to 34+5 today so we’re getting there

I had my little one 48 hours after my waters broke at 33+6 so she was born 34+1. she was a tiny 4lb 11oz but tough as an ox. I had to stay in three nights as that was protocol at my hospital but she stayed with me the whole time - No NICU. She came out screaming and ate (and peed all over me) straight away. No issues. Apgar scores of 9 and 10. She needed to have 12 hours of UV and a few days of IV antibiotics due to the premature water breaking but was absolutely fine.

I didn't get steriods as my hospital policy was 34 weeks. However, i was just on the cusp of that. The issue was they wanted to keep her in as my contractions hadn't started (they didn't start for two days) and i am T1 diabetic and they didn't want to send my sugars through the roof and steroids could send them high which would result in me having a bad time and putting baby in more danger (I had discovered i was T1 during this pregnancy and my sugars were so high i nearly lost her and my own life and was hospitalised for three days).

She's just turned three and definitely doesn't seem the worse for it

This came up in active - sounds like both of my labours (I've concluded I've got a broken oven timer) where I had a lot of niggles and timed contractions before the eldest rocked up at late 34 weeks (was in hospital for 2 weeks - a couple of days in NICU) and the younger one's escape was thwarted and she finally arrived at 36 weeks.

I also do the long niggling bit of labour then go from 0cm to baby in stupid fast time - last time was sub 15 minutes and the very experienced midwife admitted I'd caught her out, so they wanted to keep me in, but in the end I went home between trips to get checked out.

The waiting game sucks - I'll have everything crossed for you - both of mine are now preteens and fab young ladies (in general)!

Sorry, spent last few days in pain and feeling very sorry for myself. I’ve not made it to the point of having 2 in 10 for more than an hour, they start easing off after a bit but still there. Managed some sleep in between but absolutely exhausted at this point. Thought it was happening last night as pains got strong enough that I told DH if they get a bit worse I’m going in as can’t hack the pain…and then they settled down in intensity again. At least I’ve made it to 35 weeks today 🙏🏽

@tortured - yep, I think I’m the same - it’s like my body likes to do the very slow, painful build up and then surprise everyone! My only worry is I want to be in hospital when that happens!

On day 6 now and absolutely exhausted
Anyone else have any experience of this?

Back in hospital again 😭 tightenings came every 3 mins for a few hours so they called me in but no change to cervix. They're keeping me in incase the contractions end up doing something to my cervix and I go into labour overnight - if not then I can go home tomorrow. I'm so drained, I don't feel like me anymore

Hey is there any update? Your situation sounds very much the same as my experience this week!

Hiya op. How did you get on with this? I had 10 hours of very mild contractions 3-5 mins apart on Friday . I’m only 34 weeks though. It did stop but now I’m getting a lot of aches and pains. When did u end up giving birth?

I had an irritable uterus and had regular -irregular contractions from 33 weeks until I was induced at 37+0. I had preterm labour assessments at 34 and 35 weeks but unlike the OP however my swab came back negative. I had a sweep at 36+6 which sent the contractions to regular and almost enough to put me into labour. I did accept an induction the next day however and baby was born 20h later.

Ah I feel like this is me. I’ve been having on off period pains and cramps and tightenings again the last 4 days. I was in triage again yesterday but they confirmed my cervix is closed and long. I’ll be 36 weeks on Friday. Just feel on edge all the time with the pains coming and going and not knowing what’s going on x
