Bathing After C Section

Hi Ladies,

Does anyone happen to know when you can have a bath, after a c section?

Obviously, since coming out of hospital I’ve followed the midwife advice of showering and cleaning the wound with unscented soap. However, I was wondering if anyone knew how long you had to wait before you could have a bath? I’m currently 3 weeks post section. I never had a bath during pregnancy, just stuck to showers for ease, and I’m desperate for a long, hot, relaxing soak in the tub. I’ve got some special bath salts from My Expert Midwife that I’m dying to try as apparently you can use them after an C Section as well as a Vaginal Birth. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

i think last time I didn’t have a bath until I’d stopped bleeding, and also didn’t have a bath all through my pregnancy cos I was worried about infections. I haven’t had a bath this time either and probably won’t until I’ve stopped bleeding post partum - although I can’t wait to have one!!

but having said that, I don’t actually know what’s medically advised so would recommend asking your midwife x

I had as many hot baths as I wanted in pregnancy but I felt nervous both c sections to have a bath until about 5-6 weeks and the I had a cool ish one with no bath scent! How boring. I just didn’t want an infection as I did the first time in my wound

I had one after 1 week both times 🙂

Thanks guys!
I think I’ll check with the Midwives, just to be doubly sure.

Had a section about 16 months ago and I was told no bath for 2 weeks after c section xx

I had a bath while I was still in the hospital!

I was encouraged by midwives, HV and GP to have baths straight away after
both my sections.

I didn’t as it would have been too painful to climb in and out the bath.

I had a bath every day with tea tree oil straight after both my c sections. That was 25 years ago though so it's probably against the law now.

It’s interesting to see how advice changes over the years, that’s for sure!

I don’t think I could have faced climbing in and out a bath so soon after my section though!

I've had a Google and it also seems to depend on the trust. Our local trust says it's fine after 24hrs. Other say wait 2 weeks.
