Periods returning after childbirth, how quickly do they return to normal timings?

Have name changed as DH is registered! Don't want to worry him unnecessarily...

I had ds about 17 weeks ago. I have had at least one, may be 2 periods since I had him.
Before I had him my cycle was a textbook 28 day cycle.
The last period I had seemed fairly normal and occurred approximately 4 weeks after my pph ended, though there was a small break in that which makes me think that I may have had a period as early as 9 weeks post birth.

DH and I have had sex once (using a condom) just over two weeks ago.
If my cycle has resumed its usual 28 day pattern, then I am 2 days late.

DS is exbf, if that makes a difference to your cycles! And no I haven't tested, think it is unlikely I am pg, but you never know

Just wanted to know if it takes time for your cycle to resume a regular pattern and does bfing bugger it up?
Been feeling under the weather as well, headaches, nausea, irritable which I seem to remember I had when I conceived ds!

I breastfed my Ds on demand for a year, then returned to work, but continued to feed him on demand when we were together for another six months, so until he was 18 months old. My periods didn't come back until he was 21 months old, three full months after I stoppped breastfeeding!

Anyone else? I'm wanting to hear from people who's periods did return shortly after childbirth despite breastfeeding.

Mine came back at about 4 or 5 months (grrr) despite exclusive 24 hr bfing and were irregular, at least I thought so because my cycle was always dead on 28 days before. I think they were up to a week late.

You could do a test anyway to put your mind at rest

Hopingimparanoid · 28/04/2008 10:00

Well that's encouraging.
Haven't got any tests, would have to buy one. Think I'll leave it a few more days then.

my period came back 6weeks after dd was born (lucky me eh?) and has been regular ever since. dd is exbf and is now 5 months old.

Hopingimparanoid · 28/04/2008 10:07

Ok that's less reassuring....

Tis crap isn't it? Was thinking yey bfing = no periods for ages... how wrong was I?

I was most cross

I'd leave it a few days and test when you're a week late. Chances are your period will arrive soon

I got mine when DS was abot 9 or 10 weeks old, excl bf. Came back like clockwork straight away. When we decided to get preg again it took one cycle (took 3 with DS)!

Hope the test shows whatever it is you're hoping it will show

Hopingimparanoid · 28/04/2008 10:20

Would like another one, but not quite this soon! Don't even know if we can afford to have another on with the ridiculous amount we'll have to pay for childcare for ds

mine came back after 4-5 months and i was exc bfing but my son had begun sleeping through the night. i got pregnant again after 1 period despite bfing so do be careful (much as i love my dd and i'm v pleased to have her!)

minster · 28/04/2008 10:46

My first period was when ds was 6 months old & were irregular (22-36 days) until I night weaned him (the I got pg again). It was pretty much the same with dd.

Tatties · 28/04/2008 14:21

My period returned when ds was 12mo (still bf) but it wasn't regular for a few months. I think the first couple of cycles were about 6-7 weeks long iirc.
