Periods after childbirth while breastfeeding- advice please

I had my second DC nearly 10 months ago, and I am still breastfeeding her although down to 1-2 feeds per day now. I had a very light bleed 6 weeks ago which I assumed was my first period. Then 11 days ago I got what I assumed was my second period and it was much heavier like a normal period- but I am still bleeding and it's still quite heavy. Usually my periods last max. 5 days. I don't recall such long/heavy 'first' periods after having DS.... Is this normal?! Advice much appreciated (fed up of tummy cramps and running out of tampax!!!)

Anyone? (thanks for bumping Loopy!)

Bleeding has eased off today but still very crampy. Suddenly scared I could be miscarrying but it's HIGHLY unlikely I could have been pregnant.... I even did a pregnancy test 3 weeks ago (negative) as I was paranoid (alwyas find waiting for AF when breastfeeding a tricky one!).

bump. I'd go and see your GP to get it checked out, if only to put your mind at rest. Hope you feel better soon.

madmumnika - I thought my periods had come back at about ten months - but I was actually having an early miscarriage

However it is very common that the first few periods after childbirth are weird - can be light, heavy, a mix of both and irregular too. So don't worry too much.

If you were pregnant though you'd still get a positive test if you tested today probably. So it's worth going to the GP on Monday and checking.

Take some ibuprofen for the cramps. Hopefully it will pass soon

WMMC- thank you for your reply and sorry yours was a miscarriage . I actually did a pregnancy test a couple of hours ago which was negative. I think it's just a very long period....Though keeps stopping then catching me out by starting again ! Going to make an appt with GP just to chat it over and ease my paranoia....

You may need some traxemic acid or some nefamic acid. Both normalise bleeding if you are having problem periods - in the short term they can really help. But don't rule out post partum anaemia either.

I started my periods again while still BF DD, after about 4 mths I think.
